Link-Belt TCC Telescopic Crawler Cranes Assist In New York Power Project
Three Link-Belt TCC telescopic crawler cranes are among the equipment being used to build the CPV Valley Energy Center in the Lower Hudson Valley just outside of New York City. The roughly $1 billion project is a joint effort of Skanska, Burns & McDonnell, and ECCO Enterprises, and will result in a cycle power facility with gross capacity of 675 megawatts, enough electricity to reportedly power 600,000 homes and 400-plus commercial entities. The Link-Belt TCCs helping unload, sort, and assembling piping shells specifically include two 140-ton (127,006-kilogram) TCC-1400 models and one 110-ton (99,790-kilogram) TCC-1100 crane.
Joe Uva, a Skanska regional crane director who selected the Link-Belt TCCs for the project, said in a new release that telescopic crawler cranes are pivotal for low-angle work beneath unfinished construction and buildings. Overall, the mobility, time-savings, and low-boom angle chart the TCCs offer “brings a lot to the table,” he stated. The TCC-1100, specifically, was used under the Brooklyn Bridge. “We took it off the trailer, set it up, and had it working within an hour,” Uva said. “I did my drilled shafts and got out of there in minimal time.”
All Link-Belt TCCs feature 360-degree pick-and-carry charts, which enables them to move around jobsites easily. TCCs also sit wider on their outriggers compared to competing models, Link-Belt reports. For the CPV Valley Energy Center, the TCC-1400 lifted ACC pipe sections weighing between 28,000 and 48,000 pounds (12,700 and 21,772 kilograms) at a radius of up to 40 feet (12.1 meters) with 84.5 feet (25.8 meters) of boom. Stability-wise, the TCC-1400 and TCC-1100 provide tapered axles rather than traditional stub axles, enabling easier side frame installations.
“The TCC cranes are versatile and easy to move around the job. You cut down on set up time and the need for extra men to move around outrigger pads,” Uva said. “The operator is not worried about telescoping out and setting up in the right place. He just moves quickly to the right position. There is a tremendous amount of savings by using these machines.”
Link-Belt’s TCC product line ranges from the TCC-500—a 50-ton (45,359-kilogram), four-section model with 110-foot (33.5-meter) boom length—to the TCC-2500—a 250-ton (226,796-kilogram), seven-section model with 223-foot (68-meter) boom length.
