New Electric Port Crane From Liebherr
Liebherr, the Swiss construction equipment supplier and crane manufacturer, has launched the world’s first all-electric port crane, the LPS 420 E. The company created the new crane to be used in ports and terminals that support an electric machinery-friendly infrastructure.
An Electrifying Performance
The new crane, which is part of Liebherr’s LHM series, is one of the manufacturer’s more versatile crane designs. The crane is ideal for handling a variety of cargo, including containers, bulk, general cargo, and other heavy lifting applications. The machine features a 137-ton (124-metric-ton) peak lifting capacity, and is powered by a pair of 190-kilowatt electric motor-driven winches.
Any deviation in the voltage supply may trip up another machine, but Liebherr’s active-front-end frequency converter is capable of compensating for that, ensuring the crane continues to operate safely and reliably. The LPS 420 E takes advantage of Liebherr’s in-house manufactured liquid-cooled multi-drive frequency converter system, which is highly efficient and an ideal fit for ship-to-shore gantry cranes and material handlers.
Battery Operated
Liebherr’s compact energy storage units are capable of accumulation up to 200 kilowatts of power within 15 seconds. With them, the LPS 420 E enjoys a reduced peak-load in the crane main power supply, and regenerative energy can be used to offset the utility-based operating costs. The LPS 420 E is designed to work with terminals that offer a power supply ranging from 380 to 460 volts.
