Potain Cranes Help Build Vietnam’s Tallest Structure
Manitowoc, a global lifting equipment manufacturer that builds Potain-branded cranes, announced that the Landmark 81 building project in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is currently making use of two Potain MR 418 luffing jib cranes and two Potain MCT 205 tower cranes to get the job done.
Potain Gets A Tall Order
The 81-story Landmark 81 building is 1,514 feet (461 meters) tall, making it the tallest in Vietnam and one of the loftiest in Asia. The project’s contractor, Coteccons Group, had relied on the Potain cranes for 15 months, completing the structure earlier this year, in January. Potain’s MR 418 luffing jib cranes and MCT 205 topless cranes hoisted steel, formwork, and a variety of other structural components during the building’s erection.
According to Ho Van Thao, project director for Coteccons, “Their reliable operations helped us achieve a rate of progress of three days per floor, thus helping us finish the project ahead of schedule.” Suman Das, Manitowoc’s regional sales manager for tower cranes in Vietnam, suggests that the Building 81 project is just the first of many construction jobs that Potain cranes will be instrumental in throughout Asia. “With a high capacity luffing jib crane like the Potain MR 418, developers can build more floors within the construction timeframe and that means more space to rent,” he says.
Credit To The Cranes
Ideally suited to high-rise construction, Potain’s MR 418 cranes used on this project handled individual loads weighing up to 26 tons (23.5 metric tons) and made ample use of the installed 164-foot (50-meter) jib. One of the MR 418 cranes was installed inside the building to handle the first 67 floors, and another was later fixed to the side of the tower at the 60th floor to handle the remaining floors. Additional standout features of this crane include a luffing mechanism and hoist mounted inside the counterjib for simplified storage and setup, a powerful 110-kilowatt-rated 150 VVF luffing winch, and a 201-kilowatt-rated 270 LVF 120 hoist winch. Potain’s MCT 205 cranes also came in handy for the Landmark 81 project. These cranes could routinely lift up to 11-ton (10-metric-ton) loads, and were configured with 197-foot (60-meter) jibs.
