Potain Cranes Helping To Build Hospital In Peru

Manitowoc, manufacturer of Potain-, Grove-, National-, and Manitowoc-branded cranes, just released a blog post calling attention to the series of Potain cranes that are being used to build the new six-story Central Police Hospital in Lima, Peru. JJC & Dragados, the companies managing the construction, cited speed and cost savings as the primary reasons they selected two Potain MC 175 B and two Potain MC 125 tower cranes for the job.

The Ideal Capacity & Speed

When it comes to constructing buildings, few machines are more capable on the jobsite than a stationary or mobile tower crane. The Potain machines are being used to lift and install formwork, prefabricated blocks, and various building materials as the structure rises from the ground. There’s also a Grove GMK5100 all-terrain crane on site, which is being used to handle a number of its own heavy loads.

JJC & Dragados are under pressure to have the project finished by the beginning of 2019. According to project manager Carlos Rizzo, the MC 175 B and the MC 125 are ideally suited to the project due to their capacities of up to 8.8 tons (8 metric tons) and 6.6 tons (6 metric tons), respectively. Mobile cranes can handle similar capacities, but not for anywhere near a similar cost. “This is a project that demands high velocity, so the police community of Lima can benefit from the new hospital as soon as possible. These Potain cranes fit perfectly, as their lifting mechanisms are far more agile than other cranes,” Rizzo says.

The pair of MC 175 B tower cranes feature 40-meter (131-foot) and 45-meter (148-foot) jibs and the pair of MC 125 tower cranes are equipped with 50-meter (164-foot) and 60-meter (197-foot) jibs. The rental company that the builder has contracted, ETAC Peru, owns three of the cranes being used to construct the new facility. Carlos Villacorta, general manager of ETAC, has watched as the popularity of the Potain cranes has skyrocketed over the past decade due to their affordability and surprising degree of mobility. “We estimate today that 75 percent of all new tower cranes sold in Peru are Potain,” he says.

No Small Feat

When complete, the Central Police Hospital designed to serve police officers and their families will boast 80 medical offices, 128 hospital beds, an obstetric center, a surgical facility, an intermediate intensive care unit, and a heliport.
