At the bauma China 2018 trade show in Shanghai, Manitowoc debuted its biggest topless tower crane yet. The Potain MCT 565 is a top-slewing model with a maximum jib length of 262 feet (80 meters), a lift capacity of up to 35.3 tons (32 metric tons), and a free-standing height of up to 249 feet (75.9m).

“The MCT 565 offers the benefits of topless cranes on significantly larger projects,” said Francois Rotat, product manager for Potain tower cranes. “Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia, and other CIS countries have ambitious construction programs and cranes like the Potain MCT 565 will help those regions meet their goals.”

    Towering Figures

Manitowoc sells the Potain MCT 565 in a variety of configurations. Jib length can vary from 98.4 feet (30 meters) to 262 feet (80 meters), at which length it can lift up to 4.4 tons (4 metric tons). The crane’s folding counter jib varies accordingly, at 56 feet (17 meters), 69 feet (21 meters), or 79 feet (24 meters).

Maximum capacity, depending on the variant, is 22 tons (20 metric tons), 27.6 tons (25 metric tons), or 35.3 tons (32 metric tons). Potain has also come up with a new family of mast sections for the MCT 565 and other cranes in its lineup. The jib is available in 16.4-foot (5-meter) standard sections, or 10.9-foot (3.33 meter) and 16.4-foot reinforced sections.

Get Onsite & Get To Lifting

Built at Manitowoc’s Zhangjiagang factory near Shanghai, the MCT 565 is designed for easy transport and quick setup, the company says. The upper section of the 262-foot model can break down to fit on just nine trucks, for example.

Site setup can be completed in as little as two days, thanks in part to the MCT 565’s prewired “plug-and-play” slewing unit. Other features that help to speed up erection are the jib’s transport brackets and the counter jib’s dedicated sling points.

Options include a fast High Performance Lifting (HPL) winch, winch safety brakes, and an internal floor climbing system for high-rises. Delivery starts in early 2019 through Manitowoc’s dealer network.
