Grove GMK6400 Works Within 1 Centimeter Of Perth, Australia, Ritz-Carlton

Manufacturers regularly issue press releases about their units being chosen to fit into tight worksites, but Manitowoc’s Grove just one-upped them all. The company’s GMK6400 all-terrain crane worked around tolerances as small as 10 millimeters while building a new Ritz-Carlton hotel in Perth, Western Australia.

That bears repeating: A mobile crane capable of lifting 400 metric tons (441 tons) of building materials came within a single centimeter of the AUD $500 million luxury hotel on Elizabeth Quay. The Grove GMK6400 was supplied by WA Universal Rigging & Cranes.

    The Right Stuff

“Space was extremely limited on the Ritz-Carlton construction site,” says WA Universal Rigging & Cranes general manager Aaron Holding. “We needed a compact crane that was easy to set up with the capacity and reach to handle lifts over 100 meters in the air.”

The GMK6400 lifted items at a radius of more than 40 meters (131 feet), the company reported.

“Smaller, 300-ton cranes were too small to handle the lifts and larger cranes were too big for the space available,” Holding says. “The GMK6400 was the best choice and delivered excellent performance on site.”

    The Grove GMK6400

Grove says the all-terrain GMK6400 has the most load capacity of any six-axle crane, and points out that it was the only crane to have the reach, capacity, and small footprint for the task.

WA Universal Rigging & Cranes extended the crane’s 60-meter (197-foot) main boom to 54.6 meters (179 feet) at the Ritz-Carlton site, and added a 55-meter (180.4-foot) luffing fly jib and 75 metric tons (83 tons) of counterweights to get started on the job.

The GMK6400 also features a removable outrigger box, a self-rigging auxiliary hoist, and an optional self-rigging Mega Wing Lift attachment for extra capacity.

WA Universal Rigging & Cranes also employed a 95-metric-ton (105-ton) Grove GMK5095 on the project. The new six-star hotel will reach 28 stories in height and will house 205 hotel rooms plus some apartments by the time it’s completed this winter.
