Liebherr Sells Two More LHM550 Harbor Cranes To Port Of Maputo
The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) in Mozambique has added two Liebherr LHM550 mobile harbor cranes to its burgeoning facility. The new cranes join an older pair of LHM550s the company purchased in 2015.
“The remarkable growth of the Port of Maputo and its activities in recent years and the increasing demand from its customers have been the key drivers” in MPDC’s decision to double its Liebherr crane contingent, the manufacturer says.
Heavy Lifting
The original two LHM550s have proven to be satisfactory at handling high-density bulk material such as ferrochrome, a key ingredient in stainless steel and one of the Port’s primary cargoes. The cranes’ ability to move quickly and their high capacity make them well-suited for harbor work, according to Liebherr.
Liebherr is also providing handling and maintenance training to new crane operators and technicians at MPDC as part of the deal. The manufacturer has extended its service contract with Maputo Ports to cover the new LHM550s.
Besides the new cranes, MPDC has also purchased 14 payloaders, eight tractors, eight forklifts, and two rail excavators to cope with its expanding business traffic. The port underwent deepening dredging of its access channel in 2016 and 2017 to support larger vessels. Maputo Ports is also currently rehabilitating several of its quays with deeper depths of 49 feet (15 meters), according to AIM (the Mozambique News Agency). Both improvements will help the port become more competitive with other regional ports such as Durban and Richard’s Bay in South Africa.
The Liebherr LHM550
Liebherr’s LHM550 harbor crane can shift about 1,650 tons of bulk material every hour, the company says. It’s intended for loading and unloading giant Capesize-class ships.
The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of nearly 159 tons (144 metric tons), a max lifting height of 148 feet (45.1 meters), and a jib length/outreach of 177 feet (54 meters). It can hoist or lower a load at up to 394 feet per minute (120 meters per minute).
Liebherr outfits the LHM550 with a 1,300-horsepower (970-kilowatt) Stage IV / Tier 4 Final diesel engine. The mobile crane can travel at up to 3.1 mph (5 km/h) on its sets of rubber tires.
