Hiab Unveils Stronger, Lighter Crane For Underground Waste Containers
Hiab’s new S-HiPro 230W is a “stronger, simpler, and safer” truck-mounted crane for handling underground garbage containers.
"As more cities around the world turn to underground containers as an aesthetically pleasant and convenient solution for managing waste, we at Hiab have been listening to customers about the challenges of handling and emptying these containers,” says Hiab’s Director of Medium Range Loader Cranes, Hans Ohlsson.
Amsterdam and other major cities in the Netherlands are among the early adopters of underground rubbish bins, which emit less odor and can hold up to six times the amount of trash of local surface containers. The new Hiab just made its first appearance in nearby Soest, Utrecht, at the ReinigingsDemoDagen (RDD) trade fair for the waste and cleaning sector.
“Working in traffic on congested streets, they need equipment that allows them to collect the waste quickly, without damaging the truck or posing a risk to operators and the surrounding area,” Ohlsson says.
Stronger & Lighter
Hiab says that the new S-HiPro 230W can lift up to 30% heavier loads than earlier cranes of this type in the positions most necessary for the task, while weighing approximately 150 kilograms less. This means it can pick up more refuse with every lift and allows the truck to carry more cargo compared to last-generation models.
Details were scarce at this writing, but assuming that Hiab was talking about its older S-HiPro 130 crane, that would put the new S-HiPro 230W at roughly 1,580 kilograms in weight with a lift capacity of approximately 2,340 kilograms with its boom fully extended.
"We know that the main focus of fleets working in urban waste collection is to get each job done quickly and without trouble so they can carry on to the next one," says Ohlsson. “As a stronger, simpler, and safer crane, we believe the Hiab S-HiPro 230W will make it easier than ever to do just that.”
Simple To Operate
“In an industry with high employee turnover, they also need technology that offers simple and intuitive control for beginning operators," Ohlsson says.
The user operates the S-HiPro 230W using its HiPro remote control. Hiab says the remote simplifies crane operation, as does the company’s exclusive Semi-Automatic Motion system.
"With a crane that practically controls itself, operators can instead concentrate on making sure that they, the truck, and the surrounding areas are safe and protected,” Ohlsson says. “This is a crane that will keep you moving!"
The Hiab company is part of Cargotec.
