Grove GRT880 80-Ton Rough-Terrain Crane Building New York Bridge, Interchange
Yonkers Contracting Company, based in the American Northeast, has been operating an 80-ton (72.5-metric-ton) Grove GRT880 rough-terrain crane for more than a year with no downtime. The company first took possession of the crane in April 2018, and is currently using it on an infrastructure project along Route 17 in Harriman, New York.
“The 50-ton cranes we typically use didn’t have the capacities for the type of lifting that we needed to do on this job, so we really had to look at load charts to see which crane was best for us,” says Yonkers’ VP of equipment operation, Lou Marino.
Load Charts
The Route 17 project involves building a new bridge and interchange, along with a new drainage system for the site. The Grove GRT880 has been working at a radius of up to 75 feet (23 meters), lifting steel beams, precast drainage pipes, and other materials weighing up to 20 tons (18 metric tons) to heights of 25 feet (7.6 meters). Yonkers expects to complete the job later this year.
“The GRT880 has been a great fit for this project,” says Marino. “Its lifting capacity and boom length were ideal for the job, and we haven’t had any downtime with the crane, which has enabled us to boost our efficiency.”
New Jersey Grove and Manitowoc dealer Hoffman Equipment sold Yonkers the crane. “The (20-degree) tilt cab and CCS (Crane Control System) in the GRT880 are great, but Yonkers needed this crane to complete the Route 17 project because of the machine’s added boom length and higher capacity,” says Pasquale Tomasetti, account manager and sales representative at Hoffman.
The GRT880 has a four-section, full-power boom with a maximum length of 134.5 feet (41 meters). Inserts allow it to reach a maximum tip height of 223 feet (68 meters). The crane features four steering modes for better maneuverability, and it has a gross vehicle weight of nearly 58 tons (52.5 metric tons).
Crane Control System
The contractor also bought the GRT880 because its CCS is simple and familiar to the company’s many operators. Yonkers owns about 750 pieces of equipment and uses them on projects in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
“Because our equipment gets moved around to different states, we don’t have the same operators on the equipment every day,” Marino said. “So, it is important for us to have a crane that is easy to operate with a cab that was comfortable. I think we found exactly that with the GRT880.”
CCS uses two full-graphic displays and a jog dial for easier navigation and data input. Besides being easy to use, it is consistent across other Grove, Manitowoc, and Potain product lines, so Yonkers crane operators can start the workday productively no matter how new they are to that particular jobsite.
