Manitowoc’s production facility in Niella Tanaro, western Italy, has made its first Grove GRT655 and GRT655L rough-terrain cranes. They will debut in the Italian market at the upcoming GIS (Giornate Italiane del Sollevamento) lift exhibition in Piacenza October 3 to 5. The factory just started to manufacture GRT880 and GRT8100 a year prior.

“(The GRT655 and GRT655L production) is a logical decision based on the success that we achieved over the last year with the production of the GRT880 and GRT8100,” says senior vice president for mobile cranes in Europe and Africa, Giorgio Angelino. “We received a very good response from our customers in Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia Pacific in regards to models that were localized in Niella Tanaro. We are also getting enthusiastic feedback from the field, so we are confident that the customers will benefit greatly from this latest decision also.”

The Niella Tanaro site has been making cranes since 2005, including RT530E-2, RT540E, and RT550E rough-terrain models.

    The GRT655 & GRT655L

Grove’s GRT655 and GRT655L are both rated to lift up to 55 tons (51 metric tons). The GRT655L is the long-reach version of the two.

“The GRT655 can be considered the standard boom length option and is ideal for construction and maintenance companies, while the GRT655L is the longer-boom option and is widely considered a ‘must have’ for rental companies,” says product manager for EMEA and Asia Pacific, Federico Lovera. “Both models feature class-leading capabilities, Manitowoc’s CCS (Crane Control System), and a (20-degree) tiltable cab.” Lovera also touted the cranes’ inverted outrigger jacks, hydraulic disc brakes, load-sensing hydraulics, and ECO fuel-saving mode.

The GRT655 has a new boom with four telescoping sections and three modes: synchronized, sequence synchronized, and pinned boom telescoping. It can extend 114.3 feet (34.8 meters), and can reach a maximum tip height of 170 feet (52 meters) using an optional, manually offsettable, telescopic swingaway extension. The GRT655 has a gross vehicle weight of 75,640 pounds (34,310 kilograms).

The GRT655L long-reach variant employs a five-section, 141-foot (43-meter) boom. With an optional 44.9-foot (13.7-meter) boom extension, it can attain a max tip height of 196 feet (59.7 meters). The crane weighs 76,257 pounds (34,590 kilograms).

Features of the GRT655 series include a self-installing hydraulic counterweight and four steering modes (two- and four-wheel). The manufacturer also outfits the cranes with a strong HVAC system, a wide door, and smart-sensing outrigger position monitoring. Tire options can reduce the width of both models to less than 9.8 feet (3 meters) for European transport.
