Grove GRT8100 Rough-Terrain Cranes Assist Oil Workers in Abu Dhabi, UAE
Obaid Kneish and Sons General Transport Establishment of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates bought its third 100-ton (90-metric-ton) Grove GRT8100 rough-terrain crane this summer. The transportation company purchased all three cranes from Kanoo Machinery for transferring oil rigs and hoisting drilling equipment and coil tubing for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. In some cases, the cranes had to suspend loads in the air for up to a month at a time.
“The GRT8100 offers really strong load capacity while delivering precise movements, which is a big advantage for us when the crane is handling expensive oil-drilling equipment,” says Obaid Kneish and Sons owner Butti Alhamly. “Reliability and consistent high performance are vital for us.”
The Grove GRT8100
The GRT8100 has a gross vehicle weight of 119,210 pounds (54 metric tons). It has a full-power Megaform boom with five sections and a length of 39.2 to 154.3 feet (12 to 47 meters). The boom can fully extend in only 160 seconds, the manufacturer says. The crane can attain a maximum tip height of 239.4 feet (73 meters) using an optional, offsettable, lattice swingaway extension, and a reach of up to 253 feet (77 meters) using boom extension and lattice insert options. Some of the options available include 33- to 56-foot (10- to 17-meter) manual bi-fold swingaway and hydraulic luffing extensions, as well as a 10-foot (3-meter) heavy-duty two-sheave jib that can be offset to 40 degrees.
The GRT8100 is powered by a six-cylinder Cummins QSB 6.7-liter turbo-diesel generating 275 horsepower (205 kilowatts). The engine meets Tier 4 Final and Stage IV emissions standards using a Cummins Compact Catalyst and SCR (selective catalytic reduction) combination muffler along with DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) injection.
The GRT8100 also features the Manitowoc CCS (Crane Control System) with dual graphic displays and ergonomic controls. CCS has a jog dial that can adjust the controls, deploy the outriggers, and navigate the menus without requiring the operator to use a touchscreen. “Accessing all of the crane’s boom length configurations is very intuitive, too,” says Obaid Kneish and Sons General Manager George Azzi.
A 20-degree tilting cab makes it easier operators to keep an eye on the work being performed. Other features of the GRT8100 include three-position inverted outrigger jacks, tough enough to handle the hot oilfield environment; four-wheel drive with four steering modes; and the CraneStar remote monitoring service.
