Link-Belt Cranes Assemble Arena For James Madison University In Virginia

Link-Belt recently sold a 100-ton (90-metric-ton) HTC-86100 hydraulic truck crane to a Manassas, Virginia, contractor building a new 8,500-seat arena. Williams Steel Erection Company bought the HTC-86100 to help it lift steel for the new Atlantic Bank James Madison University Convocation Center on the school’s campus in Harrisonburg. The new telescopic boom truck crane joined the contractor’s existing 200-ton (181.5-metric-ton) LS-248H II lattice crawler model and 200-ton HC-248H lattice boom truck on the project.

    Tight Quarters

“The highlight of the job was lifting the final truss into place,” says Williams Project Manager Darryl Miller. “Because of the configuration of the arena, we built both ends of the roof trusses to the middle and only had about 30 feet (9.1 meters) of width on the ground to set the final truss.”

Because it would take two cranes working in tandem to hoist the 120,000-pound (54,431-kilogram), 220-foot (67-meter) final truss, the Williams crew had to set up the older LS-248H II and HC-248H less than two feet from each other in order to make the lift. The new Convocation Center was completed in late October.

    The Link-Belt HTC-86100

Link-Belt’s HTC-86100 telescopic boom truck crane has a full-power latching boom that extends from 38 to 140 feet (11.6 to 42.7 meters). Optional lattice and insert attachments allow it to achieve a maximum tip height of 237 feet (72.2 meters). Both of its fly options can be offset to 2, 15, 30, and 45 degrees. The manufacturer touts its transportability, visibility (including several cameras), integral air conditioning, and ease of operation and service.
