Liebherr To Outfit Montreal Port With Ship-To-Shore Container Cranes
Liebherr Container Cranes has agreed to provide four 71.7-ton (65-metric-ton) STS (ship-to-shore) cranes to the Cast Container Terminal in Montreal, Canada, in the fall of next year. MGT (Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership) inked the deal with the German manufacturer, which will build the STS cranes at its facility in Killarney, Ireland. The four new cranes will address the rise in container traffic at the Montreal port in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue.
“We are delighted with this latest order from Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership,” says Liebherr Container Cranes Managing Director of Sales David Griffin. “It is very rewarding for us to see the existing Liebherr equipment help drive productivity at MGT.” Liebherr has supplied MGT with five other STS container cranes over the past couple of decades, as well as 18 rubber tire gantry cranes.
The Liebherr STS Container Cranes
The new STS cranes Liebherr is building for MGT will have an outreach of 181.7 feet (55.4 meters), a span of 50 ft (15.2 m), and a backreach of 60 ft (18.3 m). The cranes will have enough reach to cope with vessels up to 21 containers wide. That’s more than necessary for the current ship traffic to the port, and is considered a future-proofing feature. The cranes also will feature Liebherr’s optional “curve going” gantry travel system, which will let them reposition and work on two interconnected angular berths.
