Liebherr’s New Four-Axle LTM 1120 4.1 All-Terrain Crane Performs Like A Five-Axle

Liebherr says that its new LTM 1120 4.1 all-terrain crane is the most powerful four-axle mobile crane ever. With a lift capacity of 135 tons (120 metric tons), the new crane performs more like a five-axle, the German manufacturer says. Moreover, its 217-foot (66-meter) telescopic boom is longer than any other four-axle mobile unit, Liebherr says. The LTM 1120 4.1 can lift 18% more and extend its boom 10% farther than its predecessor, the LTM 1100 4.2.

Being a four-axle model comes with several benefits. One is the ability to fit in tighter spaces than larger cranes, partly due to its smaller dimensions and partly due to its VarioBase variable outrigger extension system. Another benefit is the flexibility to travel on more routes without a permit and lower licensing requirements in some cases, Liebherr says. The company will reveal the new LTM 1120 4.1 at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG construction trade show in Las Vegas March 10 to 14.

Versatility On The Job

With its telescoping boom fully extended, the new Liebherr LTM 1120 4.1 can still lift nearly 10 tons (9 metric tons), making it a natural choice for raising radio masts and tower cranes, the manufacturer says. A lattice boom extension and a double folding jib can be added for an ultimate hook height of 308 ft (94 m) and a radius of up to 210 ft (64 m). The jib can optionally be hydraulically adjustable up to a 40-degree offset. Other options include a 6.6-ft (2-m) erection jib and a runner that can swing to the side.

Part of the LTM 1120 4.1’s versatility stems from its distributed ballast, which is adjustable in a number of ways. The VarioBallast system allows the ballast radius to be mechanically altered from 12.6 to 15.6 ft (3.83 to 4.77 m) or vice-versa. This feature can aid the crane when working in confined job sites. It can also boost lifting performance with fewer counterweights, reducing transport requirements. The ballast can be set up for uniform axle loads of 13.2, 14.9, 16.5, or 18.2 tons (12, 13.5, 14.5, or 16.5 mt) per local regulations.
