A 9-million-square-foot (836,000-square-meter) mixed-use residential and retail development is coming together in downtown Tampa, Florida, thanks to a contingent of Potain and Manitowoc cranes. Maxim Crane Works of Cincinnati, Ohio, supplied the eight Potain tower cranes and one Manitowoc lattice boom crawler crane for the extensive $3 billion Water Street Tampa project on the waterfront. The fleet comprises three Potain MD485B models, two Potain MR418 units, two Potain MR605B cranes, a Potain MDT269 model, and a Manitowoc 2250.

“Our tower cranes have overcome tight quarters and work at different heights concurrently moving concrete, rebar, and precast panels at a steady pace,” says Dustin Carmack, regional operations manager at Maxim Crane Works. “These cranes are adaptable to urban settings and have been at the site for over a year and have shown great performance during this time.”

    Up Close With The Cranes

The Manitowoc 2250 is a 300-ton (272-metric ton) crawler crane with a 500-horsepower Cummins engine and a 300-foot (91.4-meter) heavy-lift boom. It can be configured with various jibs to reach a maximum height of 400 ft (122 m), or with various attachments to lift as much as 1,433 tons (1,300 mt).

The Potain MD485B tower crane has a 22-ton (20-mt) maximum capacity with a 3.4-ton (3.1-mt) capacity at the tip. Its maximum radius is 262.5 ft (80 m) and its hook height per base is 303.5 ft (92.5 m).

Potain’s 35.3-ton (32-mt) MR608 top-slewing tower, similar to the MR605B in use in Tampa, can reach out to a 196.9-ft (60-m) radius. It can attain a hook height per base of 255.2 ft (77.8 m) and a maximum tip height of 237 ft (72.2 m). At its tip, it can pick up 9.9 tons (9 mt).

Another top-slewing model on the site is a 26.5-ton (24-mt) Potain MR418. It has the same 196.9-ft (60-m) radius as the MR608 above, but its maximum tip capacity is a more modest 5.5 tons (5 mt). The hook height per base for the crane is 293.3 ft (89.4 m).

Finally, the current version of the Potain MDT269, designated the MDT269 J10, is a topless tower model with a 242.8-ft (74-m) hook height per base. The maximum capacity for the user-friendly crane is 11 tons (10 mt). At its outside radius of 213.3 ft (65 m), it can raise a load of up to 3.6 tons (3.3 mt).
