Sheboygan, Wisconsin contractor Quasius Construction recently used a 6.6-ton (6-metric-ton), self-erecting Potain Igo T 85 A tower crane to build a five-story apartment complex. The crane’s 147.6-foot (45-meter) jib radius allowed it to reach every point on the downtown jobsite, where space was very limited.

“The Igo T 85 A gave us the small footprint, easy setup, and long reach necessary for jobsite efficiency,” says Quasius Director of Field Operations, Matt Noordyk. The fully electric, 480-volt crane has a base of only 14.8 square feet (1.37 square meters). “The crane runs very quietly, which is important with this being a peaceful downtown area. We didn’t want to disturb the neighbors.”

Local Potain dealer Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental offered service and support for the Igo’s operation.

    High-Rise Apartments

The 7 Penn Apartments building, located at 7th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Sheboygan, will house 66 families when completed. The site will also provide 8,100 sq ft (752.5 sq m) of commercial space and 92 underground parking spaces. The Igo T 85 A moved tons of materials involved in the construction of the complex, which included prefabricated walls, ceiling trusses, f-frame steel decks, and other building materials.

Quasius reported that the Potain crane took the place of several other types of construction equipment, such as an extra forklift for moving framing materials. Also, had the contractor chosen a crawler crane or mobile unit for the project, it would have required partial street shutdowns, raising the cost of the project and affecting local traffic.

Because the Igo T 85 A can be operated by radio remote control—an UltraView raised cab is optional—the crane operator was able to work shoulder-to-shoulder with the builders and place their materials where they wanted them. “The Igo T 85 A crane has enabled our subcontractors to work together and get the job done quicker, since workers aren’t waiting on equipment or doing unnecessary labor,” Noordyk says.

    The Potain Igo T 85 A

Potain’s Igo T 85 A can achieve a horizontal jib hook height of up to 125 feet (38 meters) with the addition of three optional inserts to its variable-height telescoping lattice mast. By itself, the mast is 66 to 75 feet (20 to 23 meters) tall. At its full 147.6-ft (45-m) radius, the crane can still lift a load of 1.5 tons (1.4 metric tons).

“Overall, we are extremely pleased with the Igo T 85 A,” says Noordyk. “It’s a versatile tool that does everything we need it to and more, helping to drive efficiency on site.”
