Grove GMK6400 & Potain MDT 319 Cranes Collaborate On Italian Waterfront Development
A Grove GMK6400 all-terrain crane assembled a pair of Potain MDT 319 top-slewing tower cranes in early summer for a project in Salerno, Italy. The two Potains will spend the next three years helping build the Porta del Mare residential and commercial waterfront development.
Building A Neighborhood
The 473,000-square-foot (44,000-square meter) project lies between the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast, both designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Porta del Mare will comprise five commercial buildings, three residential towers, 125 garages, a restaurant, and an 800-stall parking lot. The landscaped development will feature 183 apartments when completed.
The Grove GMK6400, owned by crane rental company Pergamo Sollevamenti, spent five days setting up each 13.2-ton (12-metric-ton) Potain crane, which belong to contractor R.C.M. Costruzioni. The Grove erected one of the Potains to a 230-foot (70-meter) height and the other to a 262-ft (80-m) height.
The heaviest lifts involved the tower cranes’ 12.3-t (11.2-mt) jibs, which were easily within the Grove’s 450-t (400-mt) standard capacity. As equipped for the job, however, the GMK6400’s capacity was even greater than that, as it was outfitted with its optional MegaWingLift attachment. The self-rigging MegaWingLift gives the Grove up to 70% more lifting capacity, the manufacturer says, and up to 400% more when used with a luffing jib.
The Cranes
The all-terrain GMK6400 has the most load capacity of any six-axle crane, Grove says. It offers fast setup and a small footprint, even with its outriggers extended. The crane’s 197-ft (60-m) main boom can combine with an optional 259-ft (79-m) luffing jib to attain a maximum tip height of 448 ft (136.6 m).
The Potain MDT 319 tower crane provides up to 229.7 ft (70 m) of radius and a 242.8-ft (74-m) maximum height under hook. Its capacity at the tip is 3.5 t (3.2 mt). Using Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS), the MDT 319 can be calibrated and ready to go in just 15 minutes, Potain says. CCS remembers the crane’s stopping points, monitors its stresses, and displays its status on a screen in the cabin. The MDT 319 also supports CraneSTAR Diag, an extensive fleet management and diagnostic telemetry system.
