Potain MCT 565 & MCT 385 Tower Cranes Constructing Skyscraper Apartments In Hong Kong

Five Potain topless tower cranes are at work on a residential development in northeast Hong Kong. The two 27.6-ton (25-metric-ton) MCT 565 cranes and three 22-t (20-mt) MCT 385 cranes belong to rental company NFT Group and were all built in Zhangjiagang, China.

“We selected the MCT 565 and MCT 385 cranes for the project because the cranes offer impressive lifting performance on site, combined with easier transport and assembly on site,” says NFT Business Development Manager Nawar Al Zahlawi.

“We are seeing topless cranes grow in popularity for jobsites using heavier construction materials,” says Darren Tan, Manitowoc APAC’s regional sales manager for tower cranes. “Many contractors prefer cranes like the MCT 565, which is the largest topless crane from Potain’s Asia Range.”

High-Rise Housing

The five towers of the residential development, ranging from 37 to 40 floors, are being constructed in Hong Kong’s Ma On Shan area by main contractor Sun Fook Kong. The quintet of Potain cranes arrived at the job site between March and May of this year, and are expected to continue their work until 2022.

The MCT 565 models are configured with 147 feet (45 meters) of jib. At the tip, the big Potains can lift 14.3 t (13 mt), while at an 83.7-ft (25.5-m) radius they can hoist a 27.6-t (25-mt) load.

NFT is using the MCT 385 cranes with a 115-ft (35-m) jib length. With this radius, they have a tip capacity of 11 t (10 mt). All of the Potain cranes are being used to lift steel bars, precast concrete, and decorative façade materials.

Towering Achievements

The MCT 565 comes in three editions with 35.3-, 27.6-, and 20-t (32-, 25-, and 20-mt) maximum capacities. The crane has a load moment of nearly 4 million pound-force feet (550 tonne-force meters). Its jib can be extended from 98 to 262 ft (30 to 80 m) long in increments of 16 ft (5 m) each. With a full radius of 262 ft (80 m), the M25 variant can hoist 4.4 t (4 mt) at the jib end.

Potain says that the MCT 565’s upper section and full jib can be transported on just nine trucks because of features such as a folding counter jib and a folding cab on the slewing unit. The slewing unit, counter jib, and jib can all be split into different sizes for the most efficient transport. Potain touts the MCT 565’s ease of setup, claiming that it can be erected in two days.

The MCT 385, meanwhile, is available in 22- and 15.4-t (20- and 14-mt) capacities. It has a maximum free-standing height of 213 ft (64.9 m) and a max hook height of 207.7 ft (63.3 m). It can raise loads of up to 3 t (2.7 t) at its full 246-ft (75-m) radius.
