This summer, a 9-ton (8-metric-ton) Liebherr MK 88 Plus mobile tower crane helped build a new asphalt recycling plant in the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Dutch crane rental company Boekestijn operated the crane, its third MK 88 Plus, on electrical power continuously for three months. Not only did this eliminate the noise and emissions of its diesel engine, it also saved a significant amount of fuel.

“Our MK mobile construction cranes are in increasing demand from sites requiring low noise emissions,” says Lianne Boekestijn. “And the electric operation option means we save around 8.7 gallons of fuel per day when the crane is operating at full capacity.”

    The Tool For The Job

Besides Boekestijn’s crane rental business, it provides heavy haul and machinery transport as well as project management. The company maintains 46 cranes on projects in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. “The MK 88 Plus was the right crane for this assignment thanks to its ability to change location quickly, which is due to its excellent maneuverability,” says Boekestijn.

Crane operator Danny van Vliet worked the MK 88 Plus at a tower height of just over 98 feet (30 meters) to assemble the 82-ft (25-m) high asphalt recycling plant. It lifted loads of up to 6.8 t (6.2 mt), including structural steel, machinery components, and the building’s outer cladding.

“This mobile construction crane distinguishes itself above all else through its compact design, outstanding maneuverability thanks to multiple steering programs, and its greater tower height compared to the four-axle cranes of competitors,” says Boekestijn. “Plus, it's a considerable advantage that Liebherr enables the luffed jib position to be adjusted from the crane cab.”

    Liebherr’s MK 88-4.1

The Liebherr MK 88-4.1 is a four-axle crane with an 8x6x8 drive wheel configuration. With a 53-ton (48-mt) operating weight, the machine is often called upon as a taxi crane. Its 440-horsepower (330-kilowatt), six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine can propel the MK 88-4.1 at up to 50 mph (80 km/h).

The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 17,636 pounds (8,000 kilograms) and a radius of up to 147 ft (45 m). At its full radius, the MK 88-4.1 can lift up to 4,850 lbs (2,200 kg). The Liebherr has a maximum hook height of 99 ft (30.2 m) or up to 193 ft (59.1 m) with its jib in a luffed position. The jib can be positioned at 15, 30, and 45 degrees.
