Middle Eastern Shipbuilder Albwardy Damen Buys A Grove GRT655L Rough-Terrain Crane
Shipbuilding and ship repair company Albwardy Damen, located in the United Arab Emirates, has added another Grove rough-terrain crane to its fleet. The new crane is a 55-ton (51-metric-ton) GRT655L. Albwardy Damen will take advantage of the crane’s powerful load chart and long reach as it holds major components in place during the shipbuilding process and the installation of new sections on existing ships.
Repeat Customers
“The new GRT655L is a really versatile unit for us,” says Albwardy Damen Facility Manager Shara Igor Balin. “We can lift and turn large sections at shorter radii or install smaller and lighter parts at long distances on ships we have docked. We have other Grove rough-terrain cranes (RT530E and RT760E models), so we know the build quality and durability are excellent, and the load charts are always strong.”
Albwardy Damen purchased the new Grove from local dealer Kanoo Machinery. “Our operators really love the ease of operation of Grove cranes, especially the CCS control system, and they like the fact they get instant support from the dealer’s team in their own language,” Balin says. Grove is a Manitowoc brand.
The Grove GRT655L
The GRT655L is the long-reach version of Grove’s GRT655 rough-terrain crane. It has a five-section, full-power boom that telescopes from 35.3 to 141.2 feet (10.8 to 43 meters) in length. With an optional 26- to 44.9-ft (7.9- to 13.7-m) boom extension, it can attain a maximum tip height of 196 ft (59.7 m). The crane weighs 76,175 pounds (34,555 kilograms).
Notable features of the GRT655L include a 20-degree tilting cab, inverted outrigger jacks, hydraulic disc brakes on all wheels, load-sensing hydraulics, and an ECO fuel-saving mode. It’s powered by a Tier 4 Final or Tier 3 Cummins QSB 6.7-liter diesel engine and offers four steering modes for precision positioning onsite. The crane is manufactured in Manitowoc’s production facility in Niella Tanaro, Italy.
