The Universal Tower, which opened in late 2020, is one of the most modern buildings in Central America and will house organizations like Microsoft and CINDE, Costa Rica’s investment agency. The sophisticated building is set to be the epicenter of the technology district in the capital San José. During construction, two Potain cranes—an MCT 205 and a MC205 B—worked diligently for 16 months lifting concrete, rebar, formwork, glass, and other materials needed for the project.
An A+ Tower
The Universal Tower has an A+ rating according to Manitowoc, as the building combines high-quality construction and desirable amenities with a prime location. More than 2,000 people are expected to work in the building once it is fully occupied. The structure, which is 861,112 square feet (80,000 square meters), offer spaces dedicated to offices, parking, shops, and restaurants. Local contractor BILCO deployed the Potain MCT 205 and MC 205 B, provided by Costa Rican Potain distributor EuroMateriales, and said the work of the cranes was flawless.
“Our client BILCO opted for these cranes due to their versatility, load charts, and reach,” says EuroMateriales General Manager Stefano Santini. “The cranes did their job and were the key element in the execution of this project.”
More On The MCT 205 & MC 205 B
Both the MCT 205 and MC 205 B are top-slewing cranes, and the MCT 205 is the newest topless version, having replaced the hammerhead MC 205 B. Both cranes offer up to 11 tons (10 metric tons) of lift capacity, but the MCT 205 is said to be easier and faster to erect. And with a 213-foot (65-meter) working radius, the MCT 205 has more reach than the MC 205 B that maxed out at 197 ft (60 m).
