Terex Utilities Releases Viatec SmartPTO Hybrid Power Solution For Hi-Ranger Aerial Devices & Commander Digger Derricks
Terex Utilities, the industrial equipment arm of Terex, has added Viatec SmartPTO to its lineup of HyPower hybrid power solutions for use in utility applications. Designed for outfits looking to transition their fleets to electric operation, SmartPTO leverages stored plug-in power to operate equipment, leading to reduced engine idling, fuel costs, noise and air pollution, and service and maintenance costs. It’s available for order for select Hi-Ranger telescopic, overcenter, and non-overcenter aerial devices, as well as for Commander and General digger derricks.
Simple & Reliable
Terex Utilities partnered with plug-and-play electronic PTO expert Viatec to optimize SmartPTO for its equipment. The system is simple and reliable, Terex Director of Marketing Joe Caywood says. “The system functions as an ePTO to power the primary unit and auxiliary functions as well as directly powering lights and the integrated cab A/C using factory vents and controls,” he says.
Terex Product Manager Robert Hasegawa, meanwhile, notes the maintenance-free system is largely self-contained, has a small footprint, and can be installed on most chassis and equipment. “Installation is simple and straightforward due to the modular design,” he says. “It consists primarily of mounting the SmartPTO unit and the touchscreen display along with two hydraulic hoses and a handful of electrical and connectors.”
Flip Of A Switch
Storage capacity of SmartPTO’s lithium NMC batteries ranges from 7 to 21 kilowatt-hours. A 14-kWh battery comes standard, but a 21-kWh option is available for the Hi-Ranger HRX55 for more demanding applications. Operators can change between engine and ePTO functionality with the flip of a switch, and controls are located in the cab, at the tailgate, and on the bucket. SmartPTO issues a warning at 5% battery life remaining.
“When the engine is powered, it automatically disengages the ePTO function, so for situations such as storm restoration where plug in recharging is limited, it does not impact 24-hour operation,” Caywood says.
