Link-Belt TCC-1400 Telescopic Boom Crawler Crane Chosen For Downtown Dallas Project

A 140-ton (127-metric-ton) Link-Belt TCC-1400 telescopic boom crawler crane placed hundreds of heavy, precast panels on a new building in the historic Deep Ellum neighborhood in downtown Dallas, Texas. Derr and Isbell Construction LLC rented the crane from HOLT Equipment in nearby Irving. Its tight, 16.5-foot (5.02-meter) turning radius helped the crawler squeeze into an alley just 23 ft (7 m) wide.

“We chose the TCC-1400 in large part because it is so easy to maneuver around these city blocks,” says Derr and Isbell Superintendent Randy Denn. “Whether it’s with pick-and-carry, or the tighter street requirements presented here in downtown Dallas, it’s an easy crane for this sort of work.”

The Project

The new 16-story building, called “The Stack,” is a 474,000-square-foot mixed-use development. Its bottom 10 stories required the Link-Belt TCC-1400 to hoist more than 250 precast panels.

Outfitted with its stowable 10-ft (3-m) fly, the crane used various lift equipment to turn the panels into place. “Rotating the large panels from the street went very smoothly,” says operator David Walker.

Most of the precast panels were 20 feet (6 m) tall and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with the largest pieces weighing up to 38,600 pounds (17,508 kilograms). The Link-Belt crane set the uppermost panels at 100 ft (30.5 m) above ground level.

The Crane

Link-Belt’s TCC-1400 The TCC-1400 crawler crane has a six-section, formed main boom that telescopes using a pin-and-latch system. Its three-piece, bi-fold lattice fly can extend up to 55 ft (16.7 m) in length and can now be pinned without hammering and with minimal use of a ladder. The crane can reach a maximum tip height of 257.6 feet (78.5 m) and a maximum lifting radius of 210 ft (64 m).

A 320-horsepower (239-kilowatt) Cummins QSL 9 diesel engine powers the crane, which can crawl at up to 2 mph (3.2 km/h). The main transport load weight of the crane is 93,600 lbs (42,456 kg) with its sideframes removed by its four widespread hydraulic jacks. The TCC-1400 can be transported in four or five loads.
