Liebherr Announces 50-Ton LTR 1040 Telescopic Crawler Crane, Lighter Version Of 66-Ton LTR 1060

When customers lobbied Liebherr to produce a 50-tonne (45-metric-ton) class telescopic crawler crane with the features of its 65-t (60-mt) LTR 1060, the company responded in a straightforward way. The manufacturer removed 11 t (10 mt) of central ballast and 10 t more from the slewing platform’s counterweights, and called the result the LTR 1040. In fact, the “new” LTR 1040 can even ben converted into a LTR 1060 if necessary.

Liebherr says the 50-t telescopic crawler crane is ideal for assembling prefabricated components, auxiliary tasks on wind turbine sites, energy sector work, and infrastructure construction.

Heavy Lifts From A Lighter Crane

The LTR 1040’s maximum load capacity is 50 t (42 mt). Because the crane inherits the LTR 1060’s 33- to 131-foot (10.2- to 40-meter) boom, which Liebherr says is approximately 30% longer than other 50-t cranes’ booms, it can tackle most tasks without a folding jib. The boom can also be extended and retracted with a load on the hook.

When paired with a double-folding lattice jib of 8 to 52 ft (2.5 to 16 m) in length, the boom helps the crane reach a maximum hoist height of 180 ft (55 m), at which it can lift a 3.4-t (3.1-mt) load. The LTR 1040 can also hoist up to 9.5 t (8.6 t) throughout its 360 degrees of operation at a radius of 33 ft (10 m).

    The Perks Of A Crawler

The new LTR 1040 has a 175-horsepower (129-kilowatt), 4-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine and a travel speed of up to 1.9 mph (3 km/h). Being a crawler crane without the need for outriggers, the LTR 1040 can travel with a full load on the hook in a pick-and-carry fashion.

The LTR 1040’s crawler undercarriage also allows it to climb gradients of up to 46 degrees and lift loads on gentler slopes. Liebherr supplies lifting capacity tables for various ground inclines between 0.3 and 4 degrees, as well as tables for the crane with its tracks retracted to its 9.8-ft (3-m) transport width to fit into tight work spaces. Liebherr’s LICCON system monitors all lifting operations to avoid overloads.

    Comfortable & Versatile

Liebherr made operator entry and exit very safe on the LTR 1040, and says that it meets the upcoming revision of the EN13000 crane safety standards. The tilting cab and ergonomically arranged controls reduce operator fatigue and enhance productivity. A remote control also allows the operator to run the crane from outside the cabin.

In order to rotate and move prefab components into place, the LTR 1040 can work in a two-hook mode using a 8.2-ft (2.5-m) erection jib and a second hoist unit. Liebherr says the erection jib can also be equipped with 4-line hook block reeving to lift up to 19.5 t (17.7 mt). When the crane’s runner is fitted with double reeving, its lift capacity is up to 9.9 t (9 mt).

Because the LTR 1040 is only 10.3 ft (3.15 m) in height when stowed, the crane can be transported on a standard low loader semi-trailer. Stripped of most of its ballast, the crane weighs just 42. t (38.5 mt).
