Manitowoc Outlines Advantages Of Potain’s Cab-IN Internal Mast Elevator Solution
Potain parent company Manitowoc says the Potain Cab-IN internal mast elevator system provides a wealth of benefits, including simple transportation and storage, easy assembly, cost-effectiveness, and enhanced operator security. Manitowoc co-developed Cab-IN with construction and industrial hoist manufacturer GEDA and introduced it in 2018; the system is available for mounting on Potain 5.2-, 6.6-, and 8-foot (1.6-, 2-, and 2.45-meter) K-mast systems. Cab-IN is compatible with all current K-mast bases, including fixing-angle, chassis, and cross-shaped bases.
Going Up
Cab-IN’s development stems from a French R.495 recommendation that all tower cranes topping 98 ft (30 m) include a mast elevator. Manitowoc says that while R.495 is only a recommendation, crane operator safety and comfort and jobsite efficiency and productivity are vital. Cab-IN boasts an up to 78.7-ft per minute (24-m per minute) lift speed, a 440.9-pound (200-kilogram) load capacity, and either a standard 196.9-ft (60-m) or optional 492.1-ft (150-m) cable winder.
The system’s factory integration into the mast provide its transport and storage advantages, as well as better elevator protection and prolonged service life. Additionally, mast integration means elevator and crane assembly occur simultaneously; it also means assembly and disassembly costs are much lower than that of an external elevator solution, Potain says.
Satisfied Customers
French company Duponchel Cranes began adding Cab-IN elevators to cranes in its fleet (which today numbers 30 top-slewing and 25 self-erecting cranes) in 2019. Duponchel Managing Director Francois Denoual says Duponchel technicians and operators appreciate Cab-IN’s reliability and robustness and the reduced preparation time it requires.
“Potain has been able to develop its product to take into account the various comments made by users,” Denoual says. “We are now very satisfied with the reliability, ergonomics, and ease of handling of this solution.”
Poteau, another Potain customer, also began investing in Cab-IN elevators in 2019. Its fleet includes 80 Potain cranes. “The fact that the masts are pre-equipped requires less storage space, less transport, and avoids any parts accidentally getting lost,” says Poteau Manager Thierry Poteau. “The small surface area that is exposed to the wind is also an advantage of this type of system.”
