Liebherr LR 1600/2-W Crawler Crane Busy Erecting Wind Turbines For Transportes Montejo In Colombia

Colombian power plant and energy specialist Transportes Montejo has taken delivery of a new Liebherr 1600/2-W lattice boom crawler crane. The company selected the 1600/2-W partly for its 660-ton (600-metric ton) lift capacity, and partly for the local service and support available at Liebherr’s presence in Bogotá. Moreover, Transportes Montejo had heard that Liebherr designed the LR 1600/2-W to erect wind turbines efficiently.

“We needed a crane for use at wind farms and the LR 1600/2-W is ideal for that purpose,” says company owner Fernando Montejo.

    Onsite Travel

Liebherr built the LR 1600/2-W at its plant in Ehingen, Germany. It joins more than 90 other crawler and mobile cranes in Montejo’s fleet. “Compared to our other large cranes, this crane really is more suitable for erecting wind turbines,” Montejo says. “The lifting capacity values of the LR 1600/2-W are significantly better than its rivals.”

The crane has narrow crawler travel gear of just 19 feet (5.8 meters) wide, including the machine’s hydraulic slewing beams and low support frames. In fact, the crane can move between turbine erection sites with all of its equipment, saving a great deal of setup time.

“Moving the crane on its narrow track gear is an enormous advantage on narrow roads and routes,” says Montejo. “What is more, the 600-tonner is extremely versatile. The LR 1600/2-W is suitable for an enormous range of work and delivers impressive lifting capacity.”

    The Liebherr LR 1600/2-W has a 118-ft (36-m) derrick boom, a maximum hoist height of 545 ft (166 m), and a maximum radius of 472 ft (144 m). It gets its power from a 544-horsepower (400-kilowatt) engine.

    Local Support

Since 2015, the Liebherr plant in Ehingen has maintained a sales and service site in Bogotá, Colombia. Montejo says the resulting “incredibly short lead time” was another contributing factor in his company’s purchasing decision.

“Liebherr provides reliable support for all its customers with its excellent service,” Montejo says. “It is remarkable how significantly awareness of the Liebherr brand has increased over the last few years.”
