Liebherr has developed a new, more intuitive crane operating system and a corresponding multi-touch display, both of which now come standard in the cabins of its EC-B- and EC-H-series tower cranes.

The new Tower Crane Operating System (TC-OS) features streamlined menus for crane operation and assembly, easy-to-understand icons and symbols, and centralized essential data without clutter. The fourth-generation Electronic Monitoring System (EMS-4) is a 12-inch, multi-touch display designed for long service life and readability even in adverse lighting conditions.

“I really like the new user interface,” says Liebherr employee Viktor Zhezher. “It’s easy to understand, logically structured, and tailored to the needs of different users. Everything is much faster. Control via tapping and swiping is already totally familiar to me from tablet and smartphone use.”

    Clear Control

Liebherr developed the new control interface in cooperation with User Interface Design GmbH. The TC-OS operating system offers broad language support and metric and U.S. measurement units. It is designed to present the operator or assembly engineer with the information they need on the EMS-4 touchscreen with no distractions. Each crane operator can save their preferred settings and reload them at the beginning of the work shift.

The system’s usability improvements can reduce training time, Liebherr says, while its enhanced operability brings benefits to crane scaling and other areas.

The EMS-4 touchscreen can incorporate the video feed from the hook camera, eliminating the need for a separate display. The anti-reflective and dirt-resistant display features daytime and nighttime modes, high readability, and tilt and rotate capabilities.

The operator can even control the air-conditioning system and windshield wipers using the new system, although these can still be operated via separate membrane keys within easy reach. Liebherr says that the information presented on the operator station’s controls mirrors the data on the new EMS display to eliminate any confusion over which reading is correct.
