Germany’s Kranverleih Saller Acquires A Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2, Its Fourth Generation Of 110-Ton Liebherr Cranes

Kranverleih Saller GmbH of Winhöring in Bavaria, Germany, primarily does expansion and refurbishment work for the many chemical companies in the area. Having purchased more than 100 Liebherr cranes since 1978, the company’s newest model is a 110-ton (90-metric ton) LTM 1090-4.2 all-terrain crane. The four-axle Liebherr has a 197-foot (60-meter) telescopic boom, 33 ft (10 m) longer than the boom on its predecessor, the LTM 1090-4.1.

“This crane is now the fourth generation of Liebherr 110-t cranes our company has owned,” says outgoing Managing Director Johann Saller. “The first, which we bought in 1981, was an LT 1090 truck crane on six axles with a 40-m telescopic boom.

“The LTM 1090-4.2 with its 197-ft main boom and the ballast which it can carry within its 53-t gross weight is now the perfect machine for this lifting capacity class for our customers in the chemical industry,” Saller says.

Favorable Attributes

The Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 can travel with axle loads of 11, 13, and 18 t (10, 12, and 16 mt) for inexpensive transport regardless of market. With an axle load of 13 t, the new crane carries 9.7 t (8.8 mt) of ballast, 2.3 t (2.1 mt) more than the prior model. Its lack of a second engine lets the LTM 1090-4.2 bring more ballast and a longer boom, Liebherr says, while lowering the maintenance costs of the crane. A 52-ft (16-m) lattice jib can be added atop the boom.

The LTM 1090-4.2’s mechanical VarioBallast system helps it operate with ballast radii of 12.3 ft (3.7 m) where space is limited, or 15.4 ft (4.7 m) if greater lifting capacity is required. The VarioBase feature of the four-axle crane also lets it make the most of its lifting capacities on constricted sites by extending its outriggers to different lengths. The LTM 1090-4.2’s ECOdrive and ECOmode features reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and operating noise.

Liebherr says the LTM 1090-4.2 exemplifies mobility, power, and economy. It has a maximum hoist height of 249 ft (76 m) and a maximum radius of 203 ft (62 m).

The drive engine of the crane, which also powers its superstructure, is a 449-horsepower (330-kilowatt), six-cylinder Liebherr diesel. The 8 x 6 x 8 all-terrain crane can travel at speeds of up to 53 mph (85 km/h).
