Steil Kranarbeiten GmbH & Co. KG of Trier, Germany, provides crane services for regional projects and the wind power industry throughout Europe along with heavy haulage, recovery and towing, machine relocation, and oil spill removal services. The firm recently purchased a new Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 with both the 177- and 263-foot (54- and 80-meter) telescopic booms and the complete luffing jib. The new crane is the latest addition to a fleet of 115 cranes, half of which are from Liebherr. Steil’s positive experiences with several LTM 1500.8.1 cranes—Liebherr’s best-selling large crane—led to the decision.

    Enormous Lifting Capacity

“We have operated several Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 cranes for many years and have now invested in its successor,” says owner Birgit Steil. “It is another eight-axle crane which has the same compact measurements with the H-outriggers. The lifting capacity values on the luffing jib are enormous.”

    About The LTM 1650-8.1

The LTM 1650-8.1 has a lifting capacity of 770 tons (700 metric tons), exceeding the capacity of the previous model by 15% to 50%, depending on the equipment package. The interchangeable telescopic boom grants users extra flexibility; the short boom saves on both transport and setup time, while the long boom is handy for jobs that require a larger lift radius. Both booms can be fitted with the luffing jib.

The eight-axle crane has a maximum hoist height of 499 ft (152 m) and is packed with technological features including Liebherr’s VarioBase variable support feature, which allows a crane’s outriggers to be extended to different lengths as needed for enhanced safety and increased lifting capacity. The crane’s ECOmode feature minimizes both fuel consumption and noise emissions during operation. Operators can set the working speed manually using the control lever and the Liccon 2 control system calculates and sets the proper engine speed.
