Pennsylvania Construction Company Replaces Telehandlers With Potain Igo T 85 A Crane, Enjoys Impressive ROI

Return on investment is everything when buying high-dollar construction equipment. Two years after Cedar Run Construction of Lititz, Pennsylvania, purchased a 6.6-ton (6-metric-ton) electric Potain Igo T 85 A self-erecting crane, it can point to enhanced productivity and equipment, fuel, transport, and maintenance cost savings as clear evidence of ROI. The provider of commercial framing services and turnkey wood framing solutions recently used the crane on a Camp Hill Hotel construction project near Harrisburg in place of an entire fleet of telehandlers.

“As our projects grew larger, it became obvious that rotating telehandlers were no longer providing the efficiencies they once had,” says Brent Droege, Cedar Run financial director. “So, we decided to look for machinery that could handle our increased demands. The Igo quickly presented itself as being the best solution possible, offering all the necessary capabilities most cost-effectively.”

    Time For A Change

Cedar Run purchased the Igo T85 A as it was transitioning to providing wood framing packages to general contractors of commercial projects, including hotels, apartment complexes, condominiums, and office buildings. It rented the crane initially, trialing it on a congested Philadelphia-area apartment building project that had power lines, roads, and railway tracks to contend with. For the Camp Hill Hotel, it positioned the crane on one side of the long, rectangle-shaped building and its staging area on the other side.

“Without the crane,” Droege says, “one of these sides would be completely impassable.”

The Igo T 85 A’s reach is vastly superior to a telehandler’s, giving Cedar Run the flexibility to lift and move materials anywhere from 10 to 148 feet (3 to 45 meters) away. In addition, the crane’s remote control feature lets operators move materials from outside the cab without an external spotter. These factors and others lead to a more efficient jobsite, as well as machine and labor cost savings.

    The Igo T 85 A

The Igo T 85 has a horizontal jib hook height of up to 125 ft (38 m) with three optional mast inserts. Its mast is 66 to 75 ft (20 to 23 m) tall. The maximum jib radius is 148 ft, and lift capacity at that length is 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms). The crane operates on 480-volt, three-phase, 60-Hz power, and is available with an UltraView cab that includes built-in controls and an ergonomic operator’s seat. The wireless remote control includes a digital readout that provides wind speed, radius, hook height, load, and other information. An auxiliary, connected remote is available as an option.
