Liebherr’s largest crane ever, the HLC (Heavy Lift Crane) 295000, has 5,512 tons (5,000 metric tons) of lifting capacity and a maximum hoist height of 574 feet (175 meters). A brand-new HLC 295000 was recently mounted on Orion I, an offshore installation vessel belonging to Belgian company Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME).
Out With The Old, In With The New
Having successfully overload tested the Liebherr crane at sea, DEME recently held a naming ceremony for the vessel. Orion I will soon travel to a spot northeast of Germany’s Rügen Island to help construct the Arcadis Ost I offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. DEME will also use the big crane to decommission legacy oil and gas platforms. Its ability to remove large, heavy pieces reduces the number of transport vessel routes required.

The Liebherr HLC 295000
Liebherr designed the enormous HLC 295000 with a relatively small slew bearing base column that's just 55.1 ft (16.8 m) in diameter to conserve deck space for parts and components. Its slip ring configuration allows it to rotate continuously with unlimited slewing range. The heavy-lift crane has an outreach of up to 495 ft (151 m)—at which it still has 220 t (200 mt) of lift capacity—and a fly jib capacity of up to 1,653 t (1,500 mt).
The HLC 295000 can perform split hook operation with a second, independently operated hook. It supports multiple trolley hoists that can also be used to stabilize loads. Its A-frame can be folded down when the ship needs to pass under bridges.
The two-room control cabin of the HLC 295000 features a refrigerator, a desk, and shelves. A second crane operator’s seat can be installed for complex lifts when a secondary operator could be of assistance with auxiliary functions such as sling hoists, trolley hoists, and constant-pull winches. Liebherr manufactures HLC units at a site in the port of Rostock in Germany.
