The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) recently added a new Manitowoc MLC150-1 lattice boom crawler crane to the equipment at its 265-acre International Training & Education Center in Crosby, Texas. The Crosby center offers comprehensive training to operators of all experience levels in one location, providing the most technologically advanced equipment available to build on skills learned from local union programs. The 150-ton class crane is the fifth Manitowoc crane in operation at the center and is equipped with Manitowoc’s latest Crane Control System (CCS) to keep operators trained on the most up-to-date technology.

    About The Training

All IUOE members will be able to use the crane along with a Grove GRT8100 rough-terrain crane, a Potain Igo T 70 A self-erecting crane, and a Potain MDT 219 top-slewing tower crane already at the training center. The IUOE will also soon have a Grove GMK4100L-1 all-terrain crane on-site for its members. Manitowoc has been a partner of the union for over 20 years and has provided cranes to local chapters across the U.S. and Canada for training purposes. IUOE local training programs accept around 10,000 apprentices each year, many of whom will spend time at the Crosby facility as well. The center can train 5,000 students each year through the 130 to 150 multi-discipline classes it offers.

“We have over 100 training centers throughout the U.S. and Canada—every local chapter is rightfully proud of its own facility, and we want them to maintain that autonomy,” says Chris Treml, IUOE Training Center director. “We’re just trying to augment what they already have so that they don’t have to make too many big-ticket purchases.”

    About The MLC150-1

The lattice boom crawler crane can lift up to 165 tons (150 metric tons) and has a 256-foot (78-meter) main boom, an 80-foot (24.3-meter) fixed jib, and a 170-foot (51.8-meter) luffing jib. The MLC150-1 is easy to set up with self-assembly capabilities and a button-style wire rope termination. The gantry-raised counterweight reduces components to simplify maintenance. The new cab on the crane has a wide body with increased legroom and a high-back seat with movable risers.
