220-Ton Tadano ATF 200G-5 All-Terrain Crane Helps Armstrong Crane & Rigging Inc Handle Larger Jobs
Family company Armstrong Crane & Rigging, located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, has acquired a Tadano ATF 200G-5 all-terrain crane. With its 220-ton (200-metric-ton) lift capacity and a 197-foot (60-meter) boom, the new crane will take on jobs involving cell phone tower masts, roads, and bridges.
“It seemed like our clientele always asked about something a little bit further, a little bit bigger—things like bigger precast panel installation and tower crane erection,” says Greg Nachtegaele, son of Armstrong Crane founder Dave Nachtegaele. “Where we used to have to subcontract some larger lifts, now that business will stay in-house.”
Versatile Usability
In business since 1992, Armstrong Crane has operated a 19.8-t (18-mt) Tadano boom truck for a number of years. The service the family firm received from the Tadano location in Leduc, Alberta, contributed to the decision to buy the new ATF 200G-5.
Armstrong Crane personnel liked the five-axle crane’s ease of operation, drivability, and lift adjuster feature. They also remarked on the effectiveness of its Intarder feature on the steep and tortuous roads of the area. Nachtegaele praised the flexibility of the ATF 200G-5, which can operate with jib-mounted, auxiliary winch-mounted, or baseplate-mounted setups while remaining under legal axle weight limits (with assistance from a custom-built, three-axle Transworld dolly).
The Tadano ATF 200G-5
The ATF 200G-5’s main boom can extend from 43 ft (13.2 m) to 197 ft using a double-action hydraulic cylinder. An integrated heavy-duty jib can add 19 to 118 ft (5.8 to 36 m) of extra reach.
“Our operators really like how intuitive the AML-F Crane Control System is. The machine has a great feel,” Nachtegaele says.
The dual-engine crane’s carrier uses a 530-horsepower (390-kilowatt) Mercedes six-cylinder diesel motor for travel. The superstructure of the ATF 200G-5 also has a Mercedes engine, specifically a 175-HP (129-kW) four-cylinder, to power the crane. Both engines are rated for U.S. Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emissions levels.
Tadano gives the ATF 200G-5 crane 10x8 drive and all-wheel steering. It features heated seats and air conditioning in both cabs, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and a rear-view camera.
“The ATF 200G-5 is simply a perfect all-around machine for a crane rental company that never knows what the next lift is going to be,” says Nachtegaele.
