The skyline of Burnaby, Canada, is undergoing a dramatic transformation as two new residential towers are erected by Vancouver-based general contractor Cambie Forming Ltd. One of the new skyscrapers, Hillside East Tower 1, is being erected with help from a brand-new Liebherr 280 HC-L 12/24 Litronic luffing jib crane. At the same time, a Liebherr 355 HC-L 16/32 Litronic is working on Hillside East Tower 2. The Hillside East Towers sit adjacent to two completed skyscrapers that were recently constructed using two other Liebherr 280 HC-L cranes.

“As far as we are concerned, 280 HC-L cranes have the best lifting and luffing speeds out there, they also offer impressive lifting capacities and are flexible when it comes to assembly,” says Peter Betz, managing director of Cambie Forming Ltd.

    Liebherr HC-L Cranes

Liebherr says its HC-L-series cranes are designed for use on tall buildings. Not only can the HC-L crane be assembled on tight construction sites, an optional climbing process allows the HC-L cranes to minimize the load on the building in construction and crane guy wires. When moving loads on tall buildings, such as the Hillside East Towers, the HC-L’s level luffing function simplifies operation. Liebherr’s control system automatically readjusts the hoist unit as the jib moves, allowing the load hook to travel along a horizontal path. The cranes’ Micromove positioning system aids in precise load placement.

With a maximum lift capacity of 26.5 tons and flexible assembly, Liebherr’s 280 HC-L is an ideal crane for skyscraper construction. (Photo courtesy of Liebherr.)

    More On The 280 HC-L

The 280 HC-L is available with 13.2-ton (12-metric-ton) or 26.5 t (24-mt) lift capacities. Cambie Forming’s new model features the 26.5-t capacity and a 196-foot (60-meter) maximum radius, at which the luffing jib crane can lift 7,054 pounds (3,200 kilograms). Maximum hook height on the 280 HC-L is 193 ft (59 m).

The 280 HC-L is a favorite of Richard Out, Cambie Forming Ltd crane operator. “The 280 HC-L is an extremely reliable and responsive crane,” Out says. “It’s by far the best crane I’ve worked with in my 25-year professional career.”
