First Potain MDT 489 Topless Tower Crane Recently Erected In North America
Manitowoc CEO Aaron Ravenscroft recently traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, to meet with the co-owners of Reynolds Rigging & Crane Service, owner of the first Potain MDT 489 tower crane erected in North America. The topless crane is at work on a Wilson Apartments residential building development project near the state capitol building in Madison. Potain brand owner Manitowoc is located just to the west in Milwaukee. Reynolds Rigging & Crane Service recently purchased two MDT 489s, and company owner Mark Reynolds says they’ve have surpassed his company’s expectations.
“They are easy and efficient to haul, fast to erect, and smooth to operate—features that have helped us complete work more efficiently,” says Reynolds. “The flat-top design has been very advantageous on a two-crane site. We look forward to continuing to employ these cranes to help us lead the competition and provide the best cranes available for our customers.”
Welcome To The Fleet
The MDT 489s aren’t the first Potain cranes in the Reynolds Rigging & Crane Service fleet. The full-service provider of cranes, crane rentals, and crane parts also owns MDT 389, MDT 489, and MD 559 tower cranes. The MDT 489 now at work was configured with 178 feet of height (54.2 meters) under the hook and a 180-ft (54.8-m) jib radius. Project manager Stevens Construction chose the crane for its 20,600 pounds (9,344 kilograms) of tip capacity at 160 ft (48.7 m) to handle the concrete work the project calls for.
Low Operating Costs
Launched in 2021, the MDT 489 is well-suited for large-scale infrastructure work, shipyards, industrial projects, and large construction sites with heavy load requirements, Manitowoc says. The company claims the crane has the lowest operating costs of any high-capacity tower crane, and the most highly optimized assembly and disassembly process in its class, as it takes just two days maximum to set up with a 262.5-ft (80-m) jib and a 164-ft (50-m) mast.
The crane is also quick and easy to transport, as everything but the slewing mechanism can be moved in standard shipping containers. The upper section requires just nine containers to transport, four to five fewer than cranes of similar size, Manitowoc says. Other features of note include the rotating UltraView cab, which includes access to the Manitowoc Crane Control System (CSS) that makes crane calibration possible in just 15 minutes.
The MDT 489 Up Close
The MDT 489 is available in 22-ton (20-metric-ton) M20 and 27.5-t (25-mt) M25 versions, both of which can operate with up to 262.5 ft of jib. The crane is available with either a new high-performance 110HPL hoisting winch or a 150HPL offering. Customers also have a choice of a 19.7-ft (6-m) or 26.2 ft (8 m) cross base.
