Grove says that its new 77-ton (70-metric-ton) GMK4070L all-terrain crane has the longest boom and strongest load charts in its class. Debuting at the bauma trade show in Munich, Germany, through October 30, the crane has a 197-foot (60-meter), seven-section Megaform boom with the Twin-Lock dual-pinning system.
The four-axle GMK4070L is one of the first to support the Grove Connect remote monitoring and troubleshooting system. The crane also includes the MAXbase system, which supplies faster setup and flexibility in symmetric and asymmetric outrigger placement.
“The Grove GMK4070L offers improved engineering design and adopts several latest technologies to deliver a new level of performance, operation, serviceability, and fuel efficiency,” says Andreas Cremer, vice president of product management for mobile cranes at Manitowoc. “It’s a crane that will be a true game changer, surprising many customers with just how much more a 77-t all-terrain crane can achieve.”
Long Boom, Strong Charts
With a gross vehicle weight of 105,820 pounds (48,000 kilograms), the new GMK4070L is the lightest in its class, according to Grove. The operator can set up and operate the machine using parent company Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) and its Boom Configurator feature.
With its boom extended upward to its full 197-ft length, the GMK4070L can lift up to 4.9 t (4.4 mt); at 161 ft (49 m) of boom, the crane can hoist up to 9.1 t (8.25 mt). Extended outward to its maximum radius of 151 ft (46 m), the boom can lift 1.1 t (1 mt). A swingaway jib option allows the GMK4070L to attain a 253-ft (77-m) maximum tip height.
Taxi Crane Travel
The GMK4070L can almost carry its full 20.9-t (19-mt) complement of counterweight while traveling. With 19.6 t (17.8 mt) of ballast, the crane weighs in at 18.2 t (16.5 mt) per axle. In a 13.2-t (12-mt)-per-axle configuration, it can bring along up to 14.7 t (13.3 mt) of counterweight; for a 11-t (10-mt)-per-axle scenario, 5.8 t (5.3 mt) of ballast is the limit.
The crane is powered by a single 430-horsepower (320-kilowatt) Mercedes Benz OM470LA six-cylinder diesel engine. It complies with Euromot 5 and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards and can use HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel. The engine’s Eco mode can be used together with the transmission’s Fuel Saver mode for improved fuel economy.
The GMK4070L’s new carrier cab provides high visibility and complies with European ECE R29-3 crash protection regulations. A frictionless, maintenance-free Telma retarder helps to slow the vehicle without wearing its brake pads. Grove manufactures the GMK4070L at its facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
