Grove To Show GMK5150XL & GMK5120L Long-Reach Taxi Cranes At bauma 2022 In Germany

Grove will bring its new 175-ton (150-metric-ton) GMK5150XL and 130-t (120-mt) GMK5120L taxi cranes to the bauma 2022 construction trade show in Munich, Germany, from 24 to 30 October. Over 600,000 visitors from more than 217 countries are expected to attend the exhibition, which will be the first public appearance for the new all-terrain cranes.

Both the GMK5150XL and GMK5120L are outfitted with Grove’s latest carrier cab. Designed for comfort and convenience, the new cabin seats the operator an extra 9.3 inches (235 millimeters) from the centerline to improve visibility and maneuverability.

“We are thrilled to present these cranes at the world’s largest construction equipment exhibition and are expecting lots of interest,” says Andreas Cremer, parent company Manitowoc’s vice president of product management for mobile cranes. “In recent years, Grove has led the way in the five-axle all-terrain class and these two new models raise the bar. Their outstanding taxi crane features, strength, and reach redefine what’s possible with a five-axle machine in the capacity classes of 130 t and 175 t.”

    The Grove GMK5150XL

At nearly 225 feet (69 meters), the new GMK5150XL’s seven-section main boom is longer than those of most 243-t (220-mt)-class cranes, according to Grove. The Megaform main boom with the Twin-Lock pinning system can have a maximum hook height of 325 ft (99 m) with optional extensions and a jib. Grove says the GMK5150XL’s load charts are unparalleled with an 8.9-t (8.1-mt) capacity at 225.4 ft (68.7 mt) and 14 t (13 mt) at almost 197 ft (60 m).

The GMK5150XL’s charts also impress in cost-saving taxi configurations, which can carry anywhere from 1.1 to 34 t (1 to 30.9 mt) of counterweight. The latter represents an 18.2-t (16.5-mt)-per-axle arrangement. The crane’s 13.2-t (12-mt)-per-axle taxi setup includes 11.2 t (10.2 mt) of ballast.

The Grove GMK5150XL has a 132,280-pound (60,000-kilogram) gross vehicle weight rating. However, its width of only 9 ft (2.75 m) and its all-wheel steering allow it to maneuver quite easily into position on the jobsite. The crane’s MAXbase option allows for asymmetric outrigger extension.

A 523-horsepower (390-kilowatt) Mercedes-Benz engine powers the crane while meeting Tier 4 Final and Euromot 5 requirements. The operator controls the machine via Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS).

Like the GMK5150XL, the 130-ton GMK5120L can carry ample counterweight in taxi configurations of 11, 13.2, or 18.2 t per axle. (Photo courtesy of Manitowoc.)

    The Grove GMK5120L

Grove’s new GMK5120L comes with the same width, GVWR, and engine as the GMK5150XL above, but differs with a 120-t (130-U.S.-t) capacity and an only modestly shorter 66-m (216.5-ft) main boom. The seven-section Megaform boom with Twin-Lock contributes to the crane’s max hoist height of 90 m (295 ft).

Like the GMK5150XL, the GMK5120L can carry ample counterweight in taxi configurations of 11, 13.2, or 18.2 t (10, 12, or 16.5 mt) per axle. Both cranes’ superstructure cabs can also tilt up to 20 degrees. The 46.6-ft (14.2-m)-long GMK5120L has a MegaTrak independent suspension and the MAXbase outrigger feature as an option.
