Liebherr 230 HC-L 8/16 Assists In Construction Of ‘The Spin’ High-Rise Tower In Frankfurt

When Liebherr’s Tower Crane Solutions department finally dismantled the 230 HC-L 8/16 luffing jib crane in Frankfurt, Germany, in November, it marked the end of three and half years of work for the crane on the nearly complete “The Spin” high-rise hotel and office tower. The 230 HL-L 8/16 was the last remaining crane on the jobsite; it was also the tallest Liebherr crane used on the project. Tower Crane Solutions planned the climb up and down for the 230 HL-L 8/16, and this proved to be a challenge because the 420-foot (128-meter)-high tower intentionally eschews a uniform, flat exterior.

    High Lift, Small Work Space

The Liebherr 230 HC-L 8/16 ultimately reached a hook height of 591 ft (180 m) at the construction site, which is located on Frankfurt’s busy Mainzer Landstraße road. Tower Crane Solutions designed a way for the luffing jib crane to climb the outside of the structure without inhibiting work on the building’s interior.

“The guying required for this needed to affect as few hotel rooms as possible,” explains Tower Crane Solutions Project Manager Julia Wiebeck. “If the guying had blocked too many of the hotel rooms, it would have been difficult to keep to the interior work schedule.”

Together with developer Groß & Partner, Liebherr’s team worked out a detailed plan where the 230 HC-L 8/16 would be anchored to building with three guy lines, one on the office floor section and two at the higher hotel level. This setup allowed the crane to climb on Liebherr’s 24 HC 630 tower system. Next, a second 230 HC-L 8/16 was assembled in a freestanding position, though limited space on the jobsite meant it couldn’t attach to the building for external climbing. Instead, the second luffing jib’s 277-ft (84.4-m) hook height was achieved by combining strong foundation anchors with Liebherr’s 24 HC 630 and 24 HC 1250 tower systems.

    Liebherr’s 230 HC-L 8/16

The 230 HC-L 8/16 offers a lift capacity of 17.6 tons (16 metric tons), and the luffing jib crane can lift 2.1 t (1.9 mt) at its maximum radius of 197 ft (60 m). Maximum hook height on the 230 HC-L 8/16 is 213 ft (64.9 m). The 230 HC-L 8/16 was the only crane to climb on the project, but Liebherr’s 150 EC-B 8 and 110 EC-B 6 cranes also assisted in the early construction phases. The EC-B series are flat-top tower cranes available in a wide range of lift capacities and hook heights, and new fiber rope versions offer even greater capacity.
