Pettibone took user feedback to heart as it updated its Speed Swing rail crane, culminating in the new 445F2. The multipurpose machine can thread rail in and out, remove snow and debris, clean up spikes, move rail cars, and much more. A 49-gallon (185-liter) fuel tank comes standard on the 445F2. X-Command telematics with remote monitoring and diagnosis is available as an option.

    Versatility

The Speed Swing 445F2’s boom can rotate 180 degrees to take on myriad rail-clearing and maintenance tasks. The mobile unit has a 60-gallon-per-minute (227-liter-per-minute) hydraulic gear pump for its lift, tilt, and auxiliary circuits, and a 40-gpm (151-Lpm) piston pump for its hi-rail, swing, generator, and tool circuits. The 445F2 weighs 27,000 pounds (12,247 kilograms) or 32,000 lbs (14,515 kg) with optional hi-rails.

The Speed Swing 445F2 can be equipped with an extendable boom and a 79- or 108-inch (2,007- or 2,743-millimeter) ACS tote boom with a hook or a magnet. Its long list of available attachments includes a rail threader, rail tongs, an AAR car coupler, a fork frame, a tie baler, tie and rail grapples, a switch broom, a brush cutter, various buckets, a backfill blade, and more. Snow removal options include a V-plow, snow blower, and snow bucket. Other options include train brakes, work lights, and a safety beacon.

    Locomotion

Pettibone sends the Speed Swing 445F2 down the track with a 163-horsepower (122-kilowatt) Cummins QSB4.5 diesel engine. The Tier 4 Final motor uses a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in its exhaust aftertreatment system. A 110-VAC engine block heater is included as standard equipment.

The mobile crane uses a Dana T20000 three-speed transmission with a twist-grip electric shift control. The Speed Swing’s four-wheel drive has a high/low range and a rear wheel disconnect feature. A Poclain CreepDrive hydrostatic driveline motor option lets the crane use high-flow hydraulic attachments while driving slowly either on or off the rails. The unit’s all-terrain tires are size 14.00 R24 all around. Outward dry-disc service brakes on all four wheels are backstopped by a manual parking brake.

    All Aboard

The Speed Swing 445F2’s cabin includes tinted safety glass and rollover protection system (ROPS) and falling object protection system (FOPS) peace of mind. The cab also has air conditioning and heat, a rearview camera, and front and rear window wipers. Rear defroster fans and a passenger seat are optional. The cab and engine enclosure tilt open to provide access to centralized hydraulic and electrical service zones.
