Liebherr Showcases New 110-Ton LTM 1100-5.3 All-Terrain Crane With New Cabs, LICCON3 Control System

    With a 544-horsepower, six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine, the 10 x 6 x 10 (optionally 10 x 8 x 10) LTM 1110-5.3 can travel at speeds up to 53 mph. (Photo courtesy of Liebherr.)

Liebherr recently presented its new LTM 1100-5.3 all-terrain crane at the ConExpo-Con/Agg trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The five-axle, 110-ton (100-metric-ton) crane has a 203-foot (62-meter) telescopic boom, 6.6 ft (2 m) longer than the earlier LTM 1110-5.2. It can achieve a maximum hoist height of 249 ft (76 m), and a maximum radius of 210 ft (64 m) with an optional, hydraulically offsettable jib.

Highlights of the new LTM 1100-5.3 include its new Liebherr Computed Control 3 (LICCON3) system, new cabs, and virtually wear-free starting and maneuvering via the DynamicPerform coupling module’s oil-cooled clutch system. Also, Liebherr says the crane is the first five-axle model with a narrow width of 8.33 ft (2.54 m).

    A Five-Axle Truck Crane

Liebherr designed the new LTM 1100-5.3 to be very lightweight so it can carry more ballast on public roads and handle the majority of its jobs as a taxi crane. With a 26,450-pound (12-mt) per-axle load limit, the crane can carry up to 37,250 lbs (16.9 mt) of counterweight—75.1% of its 49,600-lb (22.5-mt) maximum, which the manufacturer says is a new record for mobile cranes.

The LTM 1100-5.3 can reduce its per-axle load to 19,840 lbs (9 mt) for bridges and roads with lighter limits simply by removing counterweights. Even at maximum ballast, Liebherr says, the crane’s 29,760-lb (13.5-mt) per-axle loads are low in the chassis and distributed evenly across each axle. The manufacturer also says the new LTM 1100-5.3 is the first five-axle all-terrain crane to receive approval to drive with the boom over the front and without a dolly in the state of California.

The new crane comes with Liebherr’s VarioBallast adjustable counterweight radius and VarioBase asymmetrical outrigger extension system so it can make the most of its lifting capacities on less-than-perfect work sites. Its options include a 6.6-ft assembly jib and a side-folding rooster sheave.

    In Control

LICCON3 is the third generation of Liebherr’s crane control system, accessible through a new, large touchscreen. Completely re-engineered under the hood, LICCON3 will still seem familiar to users of previous Liebherr cranes. The faster, more powerful control system presents information in a more simplified manner and features more digital storage space. The LTM 1100-5.3 comes with standard support for telematics and fleet management technologies.

    New Cabs

Liebherr gave the LTM 1110-5.3 a new driver’s cab and a new crane cab with improved instrumentation and updated displays. Both cabs enjoy a new, automatic climate control system with a sensor to detect strong sunlight and adjust the heater accordingly.

The driver’s cab has a new multifunction steering wheel and a side roller blind on the operator’s door. An optional central locking system includes a remote key and a convenient "coming and leaving home" function. LEDs are available for the newly optimized work lights all about the crane.
