Link-Belt 248 HSL Lattice Boom Crawler Crane Gives A Lift To Reuther Freeway Project
A Link-Belt 248 HSL lattice boom crawler crane will be deployed to help restore I-696, including the Reuther Freeway. The project is part of the Rebuilding Michigan program, which will reconstruct state highways and bridges that carry the most traffic and are integral to the Michigan economy. The state estimates that the project will support 3,328 jobs across 12 projects.
Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township, Ajax Paving from Troy, and bridge contractor C.A. Hull of Commerce Township will perform the work on the Reuther Freeway in Oakland County, consisting of 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) of roadway reconstruction and nine bridges. The route accommodates 190,000 vehicles per day from commuter, commercial, and tourism traffic. With four lanes of traffic in each direction, the project will update 72 lane miles.
Link-Belt 248 HSL Crane Details
The 200-ton (181.4-metric-ton) 248 HSL has boom lengths ranging from 55 to 285 feet (16.7 to 86.8 meters) and fixed jib lengths of 30 to 100 ft (9.1 to 30.5 m). The lattice crawler crane has a maximum tip height of 347 ft (105.7 m) and is powered by a 270-horsepower (201-kilowatt) Cummins QSB 6.7 engine.
A Complex Undertaking
The project includes a complete reconstruction of the roadway, which requires not only concrete reconstruction but also curb and gutter replacement, sidewalk and sidewalk ramp repair, guardrail repair, new signage, pavement markings, and lighting. The project will also involve channel excavation, riprap placement, and a new median barrier wall.
In addition to the extensive prep and paving of the roads and ramps, nine bridges along the interstate will receive maintenance, including demolition and complete reconstruction of two bridges over the Rouge River. The project is expected to be completed in its entirety in 2025.
“From pavement removal, earth excavation, sewer installation, and grading to construction of seven new box culverts and two pile-supported arch culverts, this project had most everything we look for in a project,” says Dan’s Excavating Project Manager Eric Rau.
