    About American Crane Corporation

American 9310A Lattice Boom Crawler Crane

American Crane Corporation was already a major worldwide manufacturer of lattice boom crawler cranes before Terex Corporation acquired it in 1998 for roughly $27 million and moved its operations to Wilmington, North Carolina. Founded as the Franklin Manufacturing Company in 1882 by Frank Johnson and Oliver Crosby in St. Paul, Minnesota, the company would change its name to American Manufacturing Co. roughly a year later and then again in 1892 to American Hoist & Derrick. That name would stick until 1985, when American Hoist & Derrick became Amdura. Later that same year, a group of investors purchased the company, changing the name to American Crane Corporation.

    Significant Contributions

American Crane Corporation was instrumental in the early development and advancement of steam- and electric-powered hoists. American cranes were involved in such notable projects as the construction of the Panama Canal and Mount Rushmore, and the manufacturer made significant contributions to the World War I and World War II war efforts as its cranes aided in wartime logistics operations at shipyards around the country.

    A History Of Innovation

The company was responsible for such offerings as the Crosby Clip, a clamp that co-founder Crosby invented to fasten wire ropes. In the late 1890s, the company also invented the first mobile crane, the Traveling Derrick. In 1904, the company built the Railroad Ditcher, designed to excavate soil from either side of railroad tracks. The company’s release of the first crawler crane would follow in 1923.
