    About Bridge Cranes

Not to be confused with overhead hoists, bridge cranes are specially designed to provide a work platform on the underside or sides of a bridge or overpass, often for inspection or repairs. Some bridge cranes are built to park on top of the bridge and lower a platform over the side; others roll under the bridge on roads or railroad tracks to raise an aerial platform for access to the underside.

    How Bridge Cranes Work

Whether the unit is permanently mounted on a truck or trailer, the equipment functions as an aerial access platform. Bridge cranes that park on the top of a bridge feature multiple articulating booms to reach across sidewalks and over barriers, all while providing a stabilized, adjustable platform to get up and behind bridge girders. Their positioning flexibility allows workers to safely inspect bridges. Lift-style models raise up to provide similar inspection capabilities.

Bridge cranes are offered in a variety of designs. Larger models typically provide longer reach capacities and more advanced control systems to support a broader range of applications. A telescopic and rotation platform, for example, can help to increase the reach and help technicians maneuver the inspection team into the best possible positon. Smaller units, by comparison, are well-suited to tight areas like a sidewalk where the crane won’t impact traffic.
