Read More (About Grove GMK6300 Cranes)Manitowoc’s Grove GMK6300 series of 300-ton (272.2-metric ton) class all-terrain cranes has long been known for fast highway travel speeds, off-road performance, and stout load charts. First there were the Grove GMK6300, GMK6300B, and GMK6350, all with five-section, 197-foot (60-meter) booms and 350-ton (317-metric ton) lifting capacities. All used Grove’s Twin-Lock boom pinning, MegaTrak suspension, and MegaForm boom sections, as well as the EKS-4 LMI control system, steer-by-wire technology, and all-wheel steering systems.
Grove launched the GMK6300L in 2010 and it retained the series’ 350-ton (317-metric ton) lift capacity and 80-ton class (72-metric ton) gross vehicle weight, but featured a 263-foot (80-meter) seven-section boom, the longest on any 300-ton class mobile crane. The L-series crane also came with the EKS-5 control system and its full graphic display, five outrigger positions instead of two, and a Tier 4 Interim-compliant engine.
The GMK6300L-1, introduced in 2018, has even stronger load charts, especially at long boom lengths, with up to 16% more capacity at 226 to 263 feet (70 to 80 meters). The change is partly due to structural strengthening in key areas. As an example, Grove says that its main boom can lift up to 15.4 tons (14 metric tons) at its full height, and has a resultant working radius of 46 to 90 feet (14 to 27 meters). The GMK6300L-1 also features better fuel economy and Tier 4 Final certification.
Grove’s MegaForm boom offers excellent lift performance based on several factors, such as how one section maintains contact with the next thanks to large wear surfaces. The cross-sectional shape of the boom segments, which Grove describes as egg-shaped, provides high strength for its weight. Because of features like these, you’ll get higher lift capacity at whatever radius you choose.
The MegaTrak independent suspension found on the GMK6300 series lifts the chassis to offer improved ground clearance. Because the differential is attached to the base of the carrier instead of a rigid axle, the suspension can rise 6.7 inches (170 millimeters) or lower five inches (126 millimeters). This allows each tire to remain in contact with the ground instead of merely shifting stresses from one axle to another. The hydro-pneumatic MegaTrak system also has an automatic leveling mechanism for highway travel.
Another standout feature is Grove’s hydraulic and electronically controlled Twin-Lock boom pinning system. It uses a single telescopic cylinder and two horizontal pins as it extends sections of the boom. According to Grove, the weight saved by using only one cylinder allows it to add structural support elsewhere without affecting the overall weight of the vehicle.
