    About Kato

Founded in 1895, KATO has a long history of manufacturing machines to meet the needs of the lifting and construction industries. KATO’s early years include specializations in steel fabrication, locomotives, mobile cranes, and street sweepers, among other construction equipment. In the late 1950s, KATO began manufacturing fully hydraulic cranes, and in the 1960s, the company introduced hydraulic excavators. The company continues to develop crane, including all-terrain and rough-terrain cranes, city cranes, and telescopic boom cranes.

    KATO SR-300LX Rough-Terrain Crane

    From 1895 To 2000

KATO started as a private enterprise called KATO Iron Works, and by the 1920s, KATO Iron Works was manufacturing internal combustion locomotives and motorcars for rail use. In the 1930s, KATO was reorganized and established as KATO WORK CO, at which point the company began to manufacture cranes, engines, tractors, and road rollers. In the 1940s, the company was again reorganized as KATO HICOM (IHI Construction Machinery), leading to the development of the aforementioned hydraulic crane and excavator lines. In the 1960s, IHI launched the NK-750 jumbo, which was at the time the world’s largest fully hydraulic truck crane. IHI also developed a 4.8-ton-capacity hydraulic wheel crane in the 1970s, a decade that involved another name change—this time to Ishikawajima Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of growth with the introduction of rough-terrain cranes, all-terrain cranes, and telescopic crawler cranes.

    More Recent History

In the early 2000s, the company established joint ventures with IHIMER and SCE Construction Machinery. By 2008, the company name was changed to IHI Construction Machinery Co, all the while continuing to develop new products like crawler cranes and mini excavators. In 2016, KATO acquired IHI Construction Machinery and became KATO Heavy Industries Construction Machinery. The brand consolidation continued in 2018 when KATO HICOM was merged with KATO heavy industries and in 2019 when ISHIKAWAJIMA SCE Construction Machinery became KATO SCE. Over the years, the various mergers brought together the expertise gained across different brands, resulting in KATO offering a wide selection of cranes, excavators, earth boring rigs, and sweepers.
