Read More (About Pedestal Cranes)Pedestal cranes, also called “deck cranes,” “post cranes,” “king post cranes,” “stationary cranes,” and “slewing bearing cranes,” are space-saving models with a small footprint. With a rotating turret mounted on a relatively short, stout post via a slew ring, pedestal cranes feature a low center of gravity and may have a minimal tailswing radius. Typically they are installed on a fixed platform for stationary loading, unloading, lifting, and handling in factories, terminals, lumber yards, and scrap and recycling yards.
Note that many manufacturers, including Italgru, Liebherr, NOV, North Pacific Crane Company (NPCC), and TSC, list their pedestal cranes as offshore cranes, deck cranes, marine cranes, or port cranes. For this reason, you may find other pedestal cranes in the Harbor/Marine/Barge section of the Specialized Application Cranes category.
Pedestal cranes may have a telescoping boom, lattice boom, fixed boom, knuckle boom, or luffing boom operated by winch and rope (with or without a gantry) or by hydraulic cylinders (called “ram luffing”). There are diesel, hydraulic, electric, and hybrid (e.g. electro-hydraulic or diesel-hydraulic) models on the market. Pedestal cranes range from small to large, with the latter often having cabins.
As with other cranes, key specifications for pedestal models include their lift capacity and horizontal reach or outreach. For example, Gulf Crane Services currently makes lattice boom pedestal cranes with 30 to 100 tons (27 to 91 metric tons) of capacity and up to 145 feet (44 meters) of radius; fixed-boom models from 3 to 100 t (3 to 91 mt) and up to 80 ft (24.4 m) of reach; and telescoping boom models from 7.5 to 50 t (6.8 to 45 mt) with up to 103 ft (31.4 m) of reach that can extend and retract under load. TSC reaches boom lengths of up to 200 ft (61 m) with its 55- to 331-t (50- to 300-mt) pedestal cranes, while some of NOV’s heavy-lift pedestal offerings have capacities greater than 1,000 t (907 mt).
Other factors to take into consideration are a pedestal crane’s slewing speed and the rotational force of its swing system. Some models have continuous rotation, but for a non-continuous crane it’s important to note how many degrees it can rotate.
You’ll find some new and used pedestal cranes for sale on CraneTrader.com. Current and former brands on the market include American, IHI, Liebherr, Link-Belt, Manitowoc, National Crane, Sennebogen, and TSC.
