About Pile-Driving Cranes

Pile-driving cranes carry vertical structures called “leads” or “leaders” to install premade piles, or poles, vertically into the ground to support the weight of a new building or bridge better than the surface soil could alone. Various types of leads either hang from the tip of the crane’s boom or are fixed to it, with or without a spotter (hydraulic positioning arm) between the lower end of the lead and the crane. Piles are typically made of steel (pipes, H-piles, I-beams), pressure-treated wood, or precast concrete. Some rigs sink interlocking metal sheets to hold soil in place or prevent groundwater flow.

Many pile-driving cranes use an impact driving mechanism such as a falling, heavy piston to tap the pile into the ground like a sledge driving a railroad spike. These may be augmented by diesel combustion or hydraulic power. Other, quieter models use hydraulic ram pressure to press the piling into the ground, or vibration to install or extract piles, including temporary ones used during construction. Cranes for pile-driving applications are rated on their lifting capacity, jib length, operating weight, the maximum pile length they can handle, and their maximum crowd force (push force).
