    About Lattice Boom Truck Cranes

Lattice boom truck cranes are wheeled trucks that feature a lattice boom crane in front of an operator’s cab. Often, these vehicles are equipped with one cab for driving the truck from the yard to the jobsite and a second cab for operating the crane. Their dual-cab nature also means that these vehicles often have “front” and “rear” (or “lower” and “upper”) engines.

Other common features of these machines include a long tail and counterweight behind the crane cab, a crane boom that consists of strips of metal or metal bars that crisscross to form a reinforced structure capable of bearing a significant amount of weight. For the most part, lattice boom cranes consist of a boom and a jib, which are the long and short sections of the crane. During transport, the jib portion of the crane often folds against the boom to decrease overall length.

Lattice Boom vs. Telescopic Boom Truck Cranes

Compare these trucks to telescopic boom truck cranes, which can readily extend and retract the boom as needed. Heavy-duty variants tend to have hydraulic outriggers capable of providing a stable foundation for the crane’s operation. Lift capacities of lattice boom truck cranes vary widely, between 35 tons (32 metric tons) and less, to up to 600 tons (544 mt) or more. Common boom lengths range from around 40 or 50 feet (12 or 15 meters) to up to 200 ft (61 m) and longer.
