    About Grove

Grove manufactures all-terrain, carry-deck, rough-terraincrawler, and truck cranes across a number of product lines and lift capacity classes. Three brothers formed the company to build farm wagons in a garage in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, in 1947. In 2002, Grove became a subsidiary of Manitowoc, a global crane-manufacturing conglomerate based in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, that also owns National Crane, Potain, and Shuttlelift, makers of carry-deck, lattice boom crawler, self-erecting and top-slewing, stand-up truck, and swing seat boom truck cranes.

    Grove Expands

Grove’s crane-manufacturing efforts began when its founders identified a need early on to move raw materials more efficiently. The rubber-tired crane they developed eventually led to production of Grove’s first mobile, hydraulic industrial cranes, which in turn led to more products and innovative designs. In 1968, Grove became the first crane maker to introduce a slewing rough-terrain crane. In 1970, it unveiled the world’s first trapezoidal boom.

In 1994, Grove earned the ISO 9001 quality assurance certification, making it the first international multi-facility crane manufacturer to achieve this distinction. In 2002, Manitowoc paid $271 million to acquire Grove and retained its well-known brand name and product lines.

    Grove All-Terrain Cranes

Grove manufactures all-terrain cranes in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, with the highway speeds of truck cranes and robust off-road capabilities, thanks to the Megatrak independent suspension and all-wheel steering system. The lineup has maximum lift capacities ranging from 55 to 550 tons (50 to 450 metric tons) capacities and 167- to 449-foot (51- to 137-meter) maximum lift heights. Its carry-deck cranes feature compact sizes, multi-mode steering, and simple operation, and range from 9- to 25-t (8.2- to 22.7-mt) capacities and 48- to 95-ft. (14.6- to 28.9-m) maximum lift heights.

Grove truck mounted cranes provide a standard front stabilizer and features such as the Manitowoc Crane Control System (CSS), which provides a user interface, graphic display, ergonomic controls, and jog dial. Models range from 40- to 115-t (36.3- to 104.3-mt) capacities and 102.2- to 263.3-ft. (31.2- to 80.3-m) maximum lift heights. Grove rough-terrain cranes also feature the Manitowoc CCS, plus inverted outrigger jacks, hydraulic disc brakes, and four steering modes. Lift capacities span 30 to 165 t (27.2 to 149.7 mt) and maximum lift heights 146 to 299 ft. (45 to 91.1 m). Grove telescopic crawler cranes are designed to combine outstanding gradeability and lift capacity with 100% pick and carry capability. Lift capacities range from 30 to 140 t (127 mt) and lift heights from 131.9 to 229.7 ft (40.2 to 70 m).

    Innovative Technologies

Grove has developed a number of technologies in addition to the aforementioned Megatrak suspension for use in its cranes. A few examples include its Megaform boom, fully hydraulic Twin-Lock boom pinning system, and MAXbase variable outrigger positioning system. It also recently introduced a Euromot 5 system that it says allows its all-terrain cranes to use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel, which results in an up to 90% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
