    About Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes

From building aqueducts and bridges to wind turbines, the massive lift capacity and reach of lattice boom crawler cranes allow them to handle the most demanding construction jobs. These tracked vehicles feature a prominent lattice boom crane adjacent to the operator’s cab. The latticed boom is constructed using a crisscross pattern of reinforced steel or high-strength alloy, creating a structure able to bear a significant amount of weight while also minimizing weight. Various hoist mechanisms are available to optimize the lattice boom crawler crane for the job at hand. Behind the cab, the crawler crane is typically equipped with a tail and extensive counterweight capacity for adjustable ballast control.

    From Big To Massive

Lift capacities of lattice boom crawlers range from around 35 tons (32 metric tons) up to several hundred tons or more. Some of the largest models available (such as Liebherr’s LR 13000) can lift upwards of 3,000 t (2,722 mt); these units are often equipped with more than one engine to support the heaviest loads and to provide the safety of redundant drive systems. Common lattice boom lengths range from about 50 to 200 feet (15 to 60 meters) or more. Lift height can often be increased using lattice extensions, and the main boom can connect with a jib to increase the working range. When assembled to the full height, the tallest lattice boom crawler cranes provide a maximum hoist height in excess of 750 ft (228 m). The flexibility to modify hoist height and reach with various boom and jib combinations lets operators tailor their cranes’ capabilities to precisely meet the needs of a jobsite.

    Rugged Design

The tracks mounted to the undercarriage of a lattice boom crawler crane provide both stability and short-range mobility on construction sites. Due to their considerable size and slow movement, lattice boom crawler cranes are transported to the jobsite using trucks and trailers and then assembled near the intended working area. As such, crawler cranes often remain on station throughout the entire duration of a project, unlike all-terrain cranes that can come and go over public roads as needed under their own power. Most cranes also have an onboard deck for counterweights in addition to their engine or engines, hoist components, and operator’s cab. Some crawlers also make use of suspended or trailer derrick ballasts to counterbalance even greater lifting capacities.
